Since her debut in 2019, we’ve been obsessed with all things Lola Young. From her honest, powerful songwriting to her bold attitude and fashion sense, it’s clear that she is a truly authentic artist.
With the success of her hit single ‘Messy’ and her subsequent third studio album, Lola hasn’t shied away from discussing the difficulties of fame. With her lovable and unpolished approach, there are so many reasons to stan Lola Young, so we’ve narrowed it down to just five!
Her Mental Health Advocacy
Lola Young has been open about her struggles with mental health through both her music and her interviews. She has called her hit song ‘Messy,’ which explores her struggle to find mental balance, an anthem for ADHD. Lola has also revealed that she lives with schizoaffective disorder. This involves a mix of mood disorder and schizophrenia symptoms.
Lola hasn’t let these struggles defeat her. Instead, she’s reframed them as a superpower that contributes to her creative process. Drawing on this strength, she has fronted spoken-word campaigns for World Mental Health Day to encourage people to share their experiences.
Her Unique Vocals
Lola Young’s powerful vocals have earned her comparisons to singers such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, and this is hardly surprising. With her distinct, gritty tone and emotional delivery, Lola’s voice feels authentic and raw.
After studying at the renowned BRIT School in Croydon, Lola built her voice through intense training, starting at the age of 14. Alongside this, she hit up local pubs, performing at open mics to refine her craft. We truly think Lola’s hard work has paid off. We can’t wait to see how her voice evolves in future releases.
Her Resilience
Since her rise to fame, Lola Young has faced harassment, including body-shaming and “nepo baby” allegations. Lola has stood strong since, reminding her haters to “find something better to do.” She has explained that she worked incredibly hard to succeed, attending a disadvantaged school before being accepted into the BRIT School.
This continued pressure eventually resulted in Lola collapsing on stage in September 2025. Since then, she has chosen to put herself first, taking a hiatus from performances—and we think that’s a real sign of strength. We’re super excited about her return to the stage in March at the SXSW Festival in Austin, TX.
Her Style
From her love of baggy jeans to her use of bold colors and patterns, Lola Young’s style is a refreshing contrast to the popular “clean girl” aesthetic. Paired with her signature false eyelashes, drawn-on freckles, dark lipstick, and visible lip liner, Lola always captures a grunge-inspired vibe that we can’t help but adore.
Of course, we can’t forget her iconic shaggy, textured mullet, which has become a key part of her image. We’re excited to see how Lola’s style changes over time. One thing’s for sure, she’s built an image that’s truly recognizable.
Her Songwriting
Lola Young is never afraid to get personal, writing autobiographical songs full of honesty. From the difficulties of modern dating to self-sabotage and personal growth, Lola makes pop music with purpose.
On her standout track ‘One Thing,’ Lola reverses gender roles, putting herself in the front seat while discussing casual intimacy:
“Break your bed and then the sofa,
I wanna pull you closer,
Everybody wants to know ya,
But me, I only want one thing,
I don’t even want your number,
Don’t care if you got another.”
This is just one of many examples of how Lola uses her writing to address topics that are often stigmatized. We think this unfiltered approach is one of the main reasons she’s so successful.
