Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is finally ours. If you’ve been with us for some time, then you know we adore Olivia Rodrigo and her music hits close to home. We were there when ‘driver’s license’ hit the scene and when GUTS released with raving reviews. After listening to the new album front to back, with no skips and no pauses, here are 6 things we learned about ourselves, what it means to fall in love, and about Olivia herself.

1. Olivia Might Have Finally Found Her Sound
Although many Olivia Rodrigo fans still say SOUR is their favorite album, we think you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is Olivia’s best project to date. For some time, we’ve been of the opinion that Olivia never really quite found her sound. Even when we listen to our favorite tracks from her past two albums, we always hear a space where something is missing. It doesn’t mean the music is bad; it just means we’ve been waiting for more. Because we know she can deliver more. This time around with you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, we are finally hearing what we’ve been waiting for. Those deeper moments of self-reflection and the realization of guilt within the lyrics, but also a pushier production style that is complementing her vocals more than ever. This is what we’re tuning in for!
2. Falling In Love Is Actually Really Painful
It’s clear from this album what Olivia is trying to tell us. Falling in love is scary, painful, and extremely anxiety-inducing. Although a lot of these songs could be classified as traditional breakup songs, the love songs sprinkled in here are all tinged with a sense of fear that we heavily relate to. Love songs that don’t sugarcoat all the complicated emotions that come with the overwhelming feeling are the love songs that we always prefer to listen to. That’s real life, after all, and Olivia Rodrigo has a wonderful way of shoving reality right into our faces when we least expect it.
3. ‘Stupid Song’ Was Definitely Not A Stupid Choice
What a strong start to the album! It’s impossible to deny that ‘stupid song’ is a highlight from the new project. The entire internet seems to agree with us, as it’s one song from the album that everyone already seems to know the lyrics to. Throwing ‘stupid song’ at the top of the tracklist was definitely the right decision, and it seamlessly complements the other tracks that follow it on you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love as well. What else makes this song so much better? The music video! Olivia is following the path of showcasing ballet dancers in music videos alongside others like Sombr, Rosalia, and Sienna Spiro. We love the representation of all different styles of the performing arts!
4. ‘Cigarette Smoke’ Might Just Be Her Best Song Yet
After listening through the entire album without any skips or pauses, our favorite song was ‘cigarette smoke.’ This song shows clear growth in Olivia’s art and really pushes the boundaries of the production and writing she explored on SOUR and GUTS. It’s something new we haven’t heard from her yet, which excites us! As we mentioned, we feel like Olivia is really stepping into her sound with this new album, and ‘cigarette smoke’ is proof. The lyrics hit hard, and you can feel Olivia’s pained anger through your headphones. Now that’s how you make good music.
5. Loving Someone Else Is Not ‘The Cure’ For Self-Hatred
It’s clear that this album is all about love, from the good, the bad, the ugly, the joy, to the hatred. On ‘the cure,’ Olivia lets listeners in on a little secret – if you don’t like yourself, loving someone else isn’t going to change anything. Whoa, that hit us right in the gut (no pun intended). She sings, “But it don’t matter how your love feels, anymore. It’ll never be the cure.” These lyrics, and the entire message of the song, just really remind us of one simple truth. Self-love is more important than any other relationship. This is definitely a message we all need to be reminded of, and who better than Olivia Rodrigo to sum it up in a devastatingly beautiful song?
6. We Need To Hear These Songs Live
So, we listened to the album and picked out our favorite songs, while learning a lot about self-love and self-hatred along the way. All in all, it was a stunning 50 minutes that we will be replaying again and again and again this summer. Now, what’s next? Attending The Unraveled Tour, of course.
