Southern funk just met its match. Meet Gabriel Jacoby, a 28-year-old singer-songwriter from South Carolina who is making sure everyone knows his name this year. We were first introduced to Gabriel’s music through fellow honeybees, and upon our first listen of his EP, gutta child, we were hooked. We had never heard a sound quite like Gabriel’s. It’s a unique mix of Southern funk and R&B that makes you feel like you’re leaning against the front porch’s railing, soaking in the humidity of the Carolinas.
All this to say, we’re desperate for Gabriel’s fanbase to keep growing this year, so we’re here to do what we do best. Convince you to be a Gabriel Jacoby fan, too.
1. ‘Hello’
It’s only right for Gabriel to introduce himself to you through the first song on the gutta child tracklist, ‘hello.’ In this track, you get a great sense of what the rest of the album will sound like. Gabriel isn’t “an average Joe,” and that becomes quite clear as you start listening to his music. Our favorite part of this song? The trumpets that make you feel like you’re walking down a busy New Orleans street with jazz music flooding every corner. Simply perfection!
2. ‘Dirty South Baby’
Our favorite song off of gutta child! Now that you’ve said ‘hello’ to Gabriel, it’s time to get to know him a little bit more. What inspires his music style? Where is he from? It’s all laid out in ‘dirty south baby.’ Welcome to the stage: a dreamy harmonica and Gabriel’s even dreamier voice. Here, Gabriel will tell you he’s from South Carolina and give you a beautiful visual of how and where he grew up, his friendships, and family dynamics. It’s a true testament to the life he’s made for himself and must listen to song if you’re wanting to be a fan of Gabriel’s.
3. ‘Let’s Talk About It’
Taking a left from gutta child, ‘let’s talk about it’ is Gabriel’s latest release and (possibly?) the start of a new musical era. We’ve listened to this new song about ten times in the past week, so it’s safe to say that the hive gives it a 10/10. The sound is nothing experimental for Gabriel, but the reason why we love Gabriel is because of his funky sound, so it’s a perfect addition to his discography in our opinion. Give it a listen!
4. ‘The One’
Finally, we have to give ‘the one’ its praise. Any long-time Gabriel Jacoby fan will tell you they love ‘the one,’ and of course, so do we. This track is truly a sweet moment of ear candy and will hopefully make it onto your playlists soon. No pun intended, but Gabriel is the one on our radar this season! This track is the perfect way to close out our mini playlist!
