Rising musicians deserve a major spotlight, too! Here at The Honey POP, we are dedicated to uplifting indie artists and songwriters who are just launching their careers. Remember, your favorite artists like RAYE and Troye Sivan were once trying to find their way into the spotlight, too. Well, today, we’re giving that shining light to musician Jake Cornell. Jake is a Los Angeles pop singer-songwriter who taught himself guitar and singing at 15. Now, he’s writing his own songs, dropping music videos, and convincing us why we should stream his latest EP (spoiler, you’ll want to, too). Let’s officially meet Jake!
You can stream all of Jake’s music right here as you read along.

Hi Jake! Welcome to The Honey Pop. Let’s kick it off with a little introduction. Please introduce yourself to our readers by sharing your music journey.
Hey everyone, I’m Jake. I started playing guitar after getting grounded when I was 15. As I got better at playing the guitar, I started writing music and uploading covers online. After one of my songs gained some viewership, I ended up getting signed to a label and moved out to Los Angeles! Since then, I’ve parted ways with the label and am now independent for the first time since I started releasing music.
If someone had never heard your music before, what are three words you would use to describe your sound?
If I had to, I’d say Moody, Anthemic, Vulnerable.
Congrats on the release of your latest EP. Walk us through the making of the EP and what it means for you to be releasing it.
Thank you so much! That was such a fun project to put together, and it was so fulfilling to see it come to life. Honestly, making the EP didn’t really feel like I was making a project. I was going through a breakup when I was writing it, and was just writing what I was feeling in the moment. Then, listening back, I realized how it all fit together, which led me to making the project. It meant so much to me to put it out into the world, especially because I had written the songs so long before I put it out; it felt like I had the emotions bottled up in a way. So getting to finally put it out and have an amazing response was awesome.
If you had to pinpoint one thing you’re proud of during the creation of this EP, what would it be?
I would say the creative direction. I think the music on this upcoming project is the best music I’ve written, and so having a clear visual identity for this really is a highlight for me.
How do you get into a headspace to share personal lyrics with the world? Do you have a songwriting process that works for you?
I honestly don’t think much about it. I’m never thinking about what the world hears when I’m writing; I just have something that sticks out to me, or a concept, and go from there. I feel like every song starts in a different way for me; I don’t feel like there’s a go-to method for the writing.
When was that big moment when you felt ready to put music out into the world? How has it been received thus far?
It was in 2020 after I wrote my first song. I hadn’t written a full song before, and after writing it, I knew I couldn’t keep it to myself. Even though it was my first release, I already had a small fanbase, so the song was received really well by the people around me!
Are there any moments from this new era that you hope resonate most with fans?
I really just want to show my authenticity and hope that shines through. I feel like it’s so important to be yourself, and I want to be able to show that to my fans.
Thanks for chatting with us today, Jake! We are so excited to be along for the ride of your music career and can’t wait to hear what’s next from you. What are you feeling most energized or inspired by as you look ahead to this next chapter of your career?
Of course, thank you so much for having me! I’d say I’m just really energized for this next EP and to show my fans what I’ve been working on in the time I’ve been away.
Do you have any final thoughts for our readers and your fans?
I just want to say thank you to all of the readers and fans for the support! I know I’ve been away for a while, but I appreciate everyone who’s stuck by me, and I can’t wait for you to hear the project!
