The Mythology Behind ‘Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s Wife’

The girls of LE SSERAFIM know how to keep things new and fresh, and the English version of their recent hit is no different. Hot off the tracks of their first full length album UNFORGIVEN, this will hold us off until their next: ‘Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s Wife (English version).’ This is their first all-English song, and the lyrics were translated by their own Yunjin. If you want to check out our favorites from the album and if you want to build an outfit from the music video, we gotchu!

Who are ‘Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s Wife?’

After initial confusion and a little bit of research, THP’s got you covered: time for a little THP mythology lesson! This hyperpop anthem references three mythological women, but they have one common thread between them: The curiosity of these three females ultimately causes their demise. This mention of them can be seen as a metaphor for women breaking free from societal rules. The inclusion of these characters also ties to the name UNFORGIVEN, since these women may not have been forgiven, but the truth was revealed.

Eve

Eve is a biblical figure, she and Adam were among the first humans created. While wandering the Garden of Eden and after temptation from a snake, she eats a ‘forbidden fruit’ from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Doing so causes painful reprocussions for her and Adam, resulting in banishment.

Lyrics in the song that directly reference this story are “Forbidden fruit, want a bite/ Take it on the chain, I know I like that

Psyche

Psyche is the Greek goddess of the soul, and she was so beautiful that Aphrodite and her elder sisters became envious of her. She marries Aphrodite’s son Eros, and one day she is asked to fetch a box of Persephone’s beauty from the underworld. Curiosity struck the princess and upon opening the box, she is put in a slumber from the cloud of darkness it contains.

The Bluebeard’s Wife

The story of The Bluebeard’s Wife is from a French folktale, titled “Bluebeard.” Legend goes that the wealthy Bluebeard had six wives, but he killed them all. His seventh wife discovers their bodies in a secret room in their house when he is away. When he returns and learns this he wants to go after her as well. He, instead, is slain by the wife’s brothers and sister in the end, setting his wife free.

Final Thoughts

We think it is fascinating that these stories were put in a K-pop song, and it is definitely something different. If you need us, we will be singing “I wish for what’s forbidden / Get it like boom-boom-boom / Get it like boom-boom-boom” for the next few weeks.
