Arlo Parks’ Lyrics Are A Poetic Tapestry Of Emotion

Here at THP, “deluxe” is one of our favorite words. All of our favorite albums have a deluxe version that keeps us pressing play ▶️ over and over again. Snow Angel (Deluxe), Good Riddance (Deluxe), Aftershock (Deluxe), and so many more that we love have made their way to our Spotify playlists! Up next, to no one’s shock, is Arlo Parks’ My Soft Machine (Deluxe). Join us as we take a deep dive into our favorite Arlo Parks lyrics from My Soft Machine and what they mean to us.

‘Pegasus’ Feat. Phoebe Bridgers

“I’ll tell you the truth
Being with someone always made me feel used
Then it would make me angry
‘Cause I need love like a body needs sugar, I need love”

These lyrics hit us right where it hurts! Ouch, Arlo! Just like the body cannot function without sugar and other key enzymes, the heart cannot function without love. We know all our lover girls out there can attest to this! 💗 There is no denying we love this song, especially with that surprise feature from Phoebe. (We’re also obsessed with the music video!).

‘Blades’

“And you laugh the same, hand on mouth ’cause you hate your teeth
And I love your teeth and I’m scared to speak
‘Cause I catch a whiff of your rosehip tea”

Just like the title of this song, these lyrics take a blade 🔪 right through our hearts. We’ve all been in love with that certain somebody who tries to hide their insecurities, like an imperfect smile with imperfect teeth. And, we’ve all been that person too. Insecurities can make us feel embarrassed in a relationship, and Arlo perfectly captures those all-too-relatable feelings here. Not to mention, rosehip tea 🌹 sounds delicious right now!

‘Ghost’

“I’m so easily wounded
Glasses of pineapple juice out on the heath
My head in your lap
You offer me space, wild bees, and sweat”

These lyrics are oh-so-beautiful, transcending us to a peaceful garden with pineapple juice in hand and bees 🐝 and butterflies buzzing around our heads. Although these lyrics make us feel safe, the song is quite juxtaposed – Arlo singing back and forth about her comfort in her partner and the fear that can come with new feelings of love. Love is scary! But we are grateful for Arlo singing her truth and making us feel less alone.

‘Devotion’

“I think in a way, I’ve always loved you
I used to hate it when people said that sh*t
But I mean it
You make me feel free
Ripping it out of me like you feel”

When we’re in love, we love heavily. Here, Arlo reflects on how her love for her partner has always been inside her, and as cliché as it sounds, when she accepted that love, it set her free. Loving the right person can feel like freedom, and we are so happy that Arlo has found that somebody! My Soft Machine (Deluxe) features an acoustic version of this song, and we can’t get enough!

‘Purple Phase’

“Saturday was rotten to the core
Whispering to Jodie on the floor
Terrified of turning 24, wet-eyed paranoid”

Our final song selection opens with the most relatable lyrics we’ve ever heard. As many of us enter our mid-twenties, it can be a scary time. Getting older is quite bittersweet, as the turning of a new page can mean more independence but also more exposure to the cruelty of the real world. Arlo is not afraid to sing about her emotions rawly and unfiltered, which is one of the many reasons why we love her!
