‘Von Dutch’ By Charli XCX Is Avant-Pop at It’s Finest

Charlie XCX

Next time you send a text, you could be someone’s source of inspiration. At least that’s the case for Charli XCX’s latest hit ‘Von Dutch.’ The avant-pop sensation continues to push boundaries with her music and finds inspiration anywhere for her art, as showcased in her latest release, which will be featured on her much-anticipated album BRAT.

‘Von Dutch’

The new track, produced by EASYFUN, is a bold, synth-infused anthem that marks Charlie’s new chapter. It also shares a similar sound and pace to ‘Speed Drive’ from the Barbie soundtrack. And it’s no wonder, as both ‘Von Dutch’ and ‘Speed Drive’ were created on the same day. Shot against the backdrop of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport, the video, directed by Torso, showcases Charli’s signature style alongside Schwarzkopf, the project’s official partner. No wonder Charlie’s hair is on point, but then again, it always is.

Charli XCX Reveals The Unique Inspiration With Zane Lowe On Apple Music 1.

What sets ‘Von Dutch’ apart is its unique inspiration. In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily, Charli XCX shared that candid exchanges inspired the lyrics with friends via text messages. That’s the beauty of modern media – we love artists who have no boundaries and can draw inspiration from pretty much anything. It’s also why ‘Von Dutch’ feels like Charli is singing directly to us in the verses.

I really just wanted to make an album that lyrically was the literal things I would say to my friends on a FaceTime call or the text that I would say to my friends, which maybe I shouldn’t be saying in public. I wanted to say the things that I actually say in conversations, whether it’s the really vulnerable things or the kind of gossipy things. I wanted to just put it all in a song and not shroud it in mystery, but just say it blunt, aggressive in your face.

Let’s Talk Lyrics

Within the lyrics, Charli playfully sings about being the center of everyones jealosuy and what it’s like to be number one. And she’s so right: once an it girl, always an it girl. With lyrics like “You’re obsessing, just confess it ’cause it’s obvious
I’m your number one,”
it’s impossible not to join in and belt this anthem out against the haters.

With the new album BRAT on the horizon, we’re excited to delve into the club culture, high art references, and social commentary Charli will bring. Following the success of her previous album, CRASH, which soared to number one on the UK charts, the new project promises to be a bold declaration of artistic freedom.
