Christina Taylor Talks ‘I Got That From You,’ her duet with Brett Kissel, and More!

We got to sit down with Christina Taylor and talk about her recent release and music video, ‘I Got That From You.’ Which we are absolutely obsessed with. This release follows her album, Covers Vol. 1, which featured her covers of popular songs, which included Post Malone and Jason Aldean. The album showcased her artistic versatility and we honestly cannot wait to hear more from her.

And without further ado, let’s get into the interview!

Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
Hey, y’all! My name is Christina Taylor and I’m a singer/songwriter living in Nashville, TN. I’m originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, And I got started in music at a very early age. I started driving back and forth to Nashville when I was 18 to write and perform. Thankfully this town has been good to me and I’m still here doing what I love!

Your new single, ‘I Got That From You’ released on July 2nd, what can you tell us about it?
‘I Got That From You’ is a song about how we get a lot of character traits from our genetics, but also from the experiences we go through as we grow up. Heartbreak is one of those experiences that can really shape who we are as people, for better or for worse.

What was the writing process like for ‘I Got That From You’? How was it working with Lynn Hutton and Kelley Lovelace?
It is always such a pleasure to write with Lynn and Kelley. I’ve written with them on several occasions, and they are true masters of their craft. They truly brought the song to life, it wouldn’t be what it is without them.

You’ve opened for a variety of big-name acts, including Pitbull, Tim McGraw, and Rascal Flatts. How exciting was that and what was it like being able to perform at their shows?
Opening up for these artists, many of whom I’ve looked up to since the beginning of my career, has been an honor. I’ve learned a lot from watching them do their thing. I hope I can continue to do it, and maybe be of their status one day!

The music video for ‘I Got That From You’ features home videos from your childhood, who came up with the idea, and what was it like going through the footage to find the perfect shots?
Lexy Burke was the director and videographer of the music video and she actually came up with the idea to use old family footage and pictures. It was so fun getting to watch old videos from my childhood, and I felt like it added a whole other element of emotion to the video.

What was the process like for finding Lexy and what made you decide she was perfect for the role of director for the ‘I Got That From You’ music video?
Lexy and I are best friends! She has filmed most of my music videos before this one, so it was a no-brainer that I would ask her to come on board for a song that is so important to me. She is the best!

Your 2019 duet with Brett Kissel for the song ‘As Good As You Look’ is stunning. What was it like working with him?
Thank you so much! It was amazing working with Brett, he is truly a class act. I always loved the song ‘As Good As You Look’ but when it came time to cut it, I felt like there was something missing. Well, Brett was what the song was missing!! His voice was the missing piece to making this song great. I’m so grateful he agreed to do it.

Do you have a specific writing process you follow when you create songs or is it more of an organic, natural process?
My process is more organic. Whatever form the building blocks of the song come to my mind as (melody, hook, etc) I just go with it and build from there.

Do you have any rituals during the recording process that you’d like to share?
I don’t have too many, but one of them is that I like to have tea with a little Jack Daniels whisky in it beforehand. And another is that I almost always record barefoot.

Other than your future singles, what else can we expect from future Christina?
You can expect a lot more content to go along with the music I put out! I’m really focusing on being present on social media and completing the full story of each song with videos and picture content. I’ll also be solidifying some live show dates here soon. Stay tuned!
