Ladies and gentlemen and THP Honeybees, Seventeen’s BooSeokSoon subunit are finally returning! To everyone’s surprise, a photo popped up on the Seventeen official Twitter account with the iconic phrase from their first single, ‘Just Do It’ – “ladies and gentlemen, they call us BSS” – with a running track in the background. The teaser photo did not appear on the Seventeen pages as a regular tweet because it was posted as an advertisement, which had Carats excited, bewildered, and ready for an answer.
To prolong the confusion, Woozi also posted the teaser photo on his socials but quickly deleted it. Luckily, Carats are now able to breathe because, on January 9th, BSS officially announced their comeback with their single album, Second Wind!
What is BSS?
BSS, or BooSeokSoon, is a special unit of the K-pop group Seventeen. The unit originally debuted 5 years ago in March 2018 with the song ‘Just Do It,’ which quickly became a fan favorite. Between the high-energy choreography that was showcased in performances and their infectious personalities that were shown in behind-the-scenes videos uploaded to YouTube, it was apparent that the world would need more than one release from the trio!
The fans quickly wanted more from the special unit, and have been asking for more content to the point of even getting into a fan call with DK and asking him about a comeback. Even Carat Twitter has been plagued with memes and tweets begging for a comeback since 2018 and when they finally got one, the platform exploded. The announcement broke K-pop Twitter as a whole, securing a place in the top 15 in worldwide trends for the entire website.
The name BooSeokSoon derives from the members’ names: Boo Seungkwan, Lee Seokmin (also known as DK), and Kwon Soonyoung (also known as Hoshi). Just like any other Seventeen Subunit, each member has their own role. Usually, the lead vocalist in the group, DK, throws on his leader hat to direct this special trio to success. In contrast, Hoshi, leader of the performance unit, gets to take off his leader hat and serve as the trio’s main dancer, rapper, and vocalist. Seungkwan, now the maknae, gets to keep his title of lead vocalist while also getting to show off his rapping skills as a main rapper.
We don’t know what to expect from BSS in 2023. We didn’t expect to hear from them in 2023 at all, so this comeback is a huge surprise to everyone! With the versatility of Seventeen, ‘Second Wind’ could be a fun pop song like ‘Just Do It,’ or they could take the hip-hop route like the leader line in 2022. No matter the genre, BSS is ready to dominate our playlists with a hit.
