Ed Sheeran Pours Heart Into New Album

Wake up, Bee Hive! Ed Sheeran is back! 

The international singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran, made an exciting announcement earlier this week. The final album in his mathematical series, -, is to be released in just a few short months. Fans have been speculating about this release since he embarked on his Mathematics Tour. The subtract sign was featured on the tour’s announcement poster, hinting at a potential release.

Ed Sheeran has been playing music since he picked up a guitar at age twelve. First, he learned how to play ‘Layla’ by Eric Clapton and soon many other of his favorite songs. The singer previously explained that one of his biggest influences in music was his father, John, who introduced him to Damian Rice, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. Artists who have influenced Ed Sheeran’s approach to songwriting and, in turn, this deeply personal upcoming album.

In 2011, Sheeran released his first full-length album + and quickly started gaining traction. In the years to follow, his records x, ÷, and = led to even more success. He’s collaborated with some of the most prominent artists in music today and has been awarded four Grammys. Diving Deep

The ‘Thinking Out Loud’ singer opened up on social media about the personal writing process of -. “Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumor, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter.”

He had been working on this body of work for most of his career. He was trying to perfectly capture an acoustic album that fans would love and relate to. However, life had other plans. So Ed Sheeran found himself scrapping a decade’s worth of work out for an embodiment of his adult life thus far. 

“As an artist,” Sheeran started, “I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life.”

The album is a body of work that pushes the line between personal and public. It has already been described as “the most profound songwriting of his career” prior to its release.
