Our Dream Soundtrack For Hayley Kiyoko’s Audiobook, Girls Like Girls

Girls Like Girls by “Hayley Kiyoko. A sapphic anthem. A coming-of-age sapphic novel. And soon, it’ll be our favorite audiobook! The highly anticipated audiobook will feature Hayley herself, as well as the talents of voice actor Natalie Naudus as Sonya, 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn as Trenton, actress Malia Pyles, and Katie Gavin from one of our favorite indie-pop bands, MUNA! In honor of the release, here are 4 songs we think would be perfect for a Girls Like Girls soundtrack.

“They have all made such a positive impact on the queer community through their art and by living their authentic truth each and every day. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast to help me tell this story.”

Hayley Kiyoko

‘Gravel to Tempo’

“I don’t feel adequate,
thinking I’m a monster in disguise”

Since the book deals with facing homophobia, this song is very fitting. Unfortunately, so many people in the LGBTQ+ community deal with internalized homophobia. It’s different for everyone, but this song is especially for sapphics. It’s important to talk about it so that people who do struggle with it can overcome it.

‘chance’

“‘Cause I don’t know how to read her mind,
and I don’t wanna cross the line,
does she know I’m thinking ’bout her plenty?”

In general, taking a ‘chance’ on love is scary. But it’s especially scary for sapphic girls and women. The lyrics hit hard because being afraid of crossing lines is a very real fear.

‘Girls Like Girls’

“Girls like girls, like boys do, nothing new”

Obviously, the song that the book is based on has to be on the soundtrack. We all know that it’s a sapphic anthem. But it’s important to remember that this song was released in 2015. It may not seem like a long time ago, but even in just that time, public perception has, thankfully, changed so much, primarily for the better. There weren’t many sapphic love songs that were popular on that level.

Since Katie Gavin from MUNA is also going to be in this audiobook, we thought it’d be a perfect time to throw in one of their songs so we have a moment to fangirl over them.

‘I Know A Place’ By MUNA

“Don’t you be afraid of love and affection”

This song is perfect because it’s basically the theme of the book. In general, we highly recommend this song, especially if you aren’t familiar with them yet. We guarantee that you’ll love it.

So, those are just a few of our suggestions. We would definitely not be mad if they did decide to make their own soundtrack or even just a playlist of songs that they feel would meet the vibe.

On another note, the Panorama tour has begun! In case you missed it, here’s our dream setlist! You can get tickets here.
