Happy Gender Diversity in Music Month! Never heard of it? That’s okay, we’ve got you covered. All throughout April, Girls Behind The Rock Show invites and encourages you to celebrate those voices that are misrepresented in the music industry including women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals.
The Beginning
This initiative was developed by GBTRS to create a platform to amplify underrepresented voices in the industry. Everyone has something to share with the world and a story to tell. With the help of GBTRS and the development of this special month, we hope those will get the chance to be told. Built on the dream of creating inclusion, everyone is invited to take part and make a difference!
The Pledge
“I support in solidarity for more visible inclusive and equitable opportunities for my Trans and Gender-Diverse siblings in the music community!”
So, now you’re wondering how can you support, right? First and foremost, spread the word! Tell your friends, family, and favorite Twitter mutuals about Gender Diversity in Music Month. The more we spread the word, the more people can get involved! Next, get out there and hype up your favorite artists. Stream their work, share their tweets, and most importantly: appreciate their craft. Embrace what they bring to music. Finally, make sure you visit the official website for more information!
Last thing to do? Vamp up your playlist! Here are just a couple of our favorite artists to get you started.
‘Waste of Space’ – G Flip
The most recent release from the Australian musician and producer, ‘Waste of Space’ is a raw look at gender identity from the first line: “I don’t feel like I’m a girl nor a boy, so where do I lie?” sharing their perspective on finding their gender identity. Joined by several young people in the community, they all come together to sing the lyrics in a beautiful and captivating display of belonging which is the heart of this amazing month.
‘Let Us Die’ – King Princess
In a video set in a dingy doctor’s office, King Princess brings to life the feeling of having your heart ripped out of your chest… literally. Coming in with a broken heart, this song is all about letting go of who or what hurts us even when we don’t want to. Comparing the pain to driving a car off a cliff or sticking our fingers into light sockets, the visuals are off the charts!
