THP’s Favorite Mitski Tracks In Celebration Of ‘Bug Like an Angel’

She is baaack! By the title alone, you know exactly who we are talking about; it’s Mitski, and she has brought with her ‘Bug Like an Angel!’

New Mitski

If you are always on the lookout in the Mitskiverse, then you know Mitski has released a new track, ‘Bug Like an Angel.’ It’s the first track from her upcoming album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, which will hit our playlists on September 15th. You can pre-save the album here. Now, back to the track!

‘Bug Like an Angel’ has everything to love about a track. The isolated instrumental opening, Mitski’s angelic vocals, deep lyrics, and a choir. You read that right; it has all of that and more! Mitski’s vocals are as solid as they’ve always been and are almost haunting in some parts. And it isn’t a Mitski track without sad, deep, poetic lyrics such as, “I learned I’m a drinker / Sometimes a drink feels like family.” To end your first verse with that line and then jump-scare us with a choir is typical Mitski.

To us, ‘Bug Like an Angel,’ and specifically the chorus parts with the choir, give us David Byrne vibes. Who she collabed with for ‘This Is A Life’ for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Which we’ve been obsessed with since its release. It is different from her previous releases; it has a different air to it. No, seriously, if you haven’t already, listen to it, and you’ll know what we mean!

She also had this to say about this new era of Mitski.

….I recognized that I really want to keep making music, and I’m willing to take the difficult stuff with the wonderful stuff – like any job, or relationship, or worthwhile thing in life.

Mitski from her letter via email

This is why we are loving this era so much! It is nice knowing Mitski enjoyed creating this track and album, as well as making us breathe a sigh of relief knowing that we’re getting more Mitski tracks.

So as you suspected, ‘Bug Like an Angel’ has quickly climbed the charts and onto our list of favorite Mitski tracks. And because we want everyone to check out the endless talent Mitski possesses, we made a list for you of our favorite Mitski tracks. Enjoy!

‘Should’ve Been Me’

Opening our list with ‘Should’ve Been Me,’ from her previous release, Laurel Hell. The LP had a lot of our favorites, but this has to be our number one from that project. First off, we love the instrumental of what we assume is a single note on a xylophone in the beginning, being hit, it’s what made the track stand out from the others. Plus, her soft vocals, much like in ‘Bug Like an Angel’ stood out compared to the music.

‘Washing Machine Heart’

Off of Be The Cowboy, ‘Washing Machine Heart’ was our top song of 2021 with 57 listens…yeah. So you know, we enjoy the track a reasonable amount; it obviously has to make its way onto our list. If a track like this was your way of being introduced to an artist, consider yourself very lucky.

‘Me And My Husband’

Another track we love from Be The Cowboy is ‘Me and My Husband.’ We have seen this track used for a good amount of sad edits, and we don’t blame y’all. What we love most about this track is the fact that the beat is so happy and upbeat, while the lyrics tell a totally different story.

‘Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart’

There are a couple of reasons ‘Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart’ had to make its way onto here. We obviously had to include a track off of Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, because, if you didn’t know, it, along with Lush, was created for her senior project in college! Which is super impressive. Also, we can’t help but mention her higher pitch when singing the first chorus is pure perfection.

‘Class of 2013’

‘Class of 2013’, also from Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, has to be in our top three fave Mitski tracks. The track is on the shorter side of Mitski tracks, and though we wish it was longer, we don’t think we would survive. The lyrics in this track are so freaking relatable, and we love how isolated her vocals are with the occasional guitar strum. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve listened to ‘Class of 2013’ just to feel something.

‘Drunk Walk Home’

Closing out our list is ‘Drunk Walk Home’ from, and we quote (from Milhouse), “bury me at make out creek.” This is up there with ‘Washing Machine Heart’ with how many times we’ve listened to it. In all honesty, we loved this track for a couple of reasons. One, we were 23 when we heard this track, so ya know it resonated with us. Two, the vocals, and specifically the screams she does in the end, give us chills.

There you go; now you have six tracks to stream alongside ‘Bug Like an Angel!’ We like our picks; what about you? Do we have the same favorite Mitski tracks? What would your list look like?
