5 Times Ms. Lauryn Hill Schooled Us With Her Brilliant Lyrics

We are seated and ready for class! Some may call Ms. Lauryn Hill ‘Uneducated,’ but with those lyrics, we can only call her genius. It’s been 25 years since the iconic R&B artist dropped The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but we are still jamming to it, and reveling in its glory, today. With songs like ‘I Used to Love Him’ and ‘Doo Woop (That Thing),’ how can we forget the face behind the lyrics that make us ooze with soul 🎶.

In honor of the 25th anniversary and Lauryn Hill’s tour announcement, we are going to be breaking down five lyrics that made us rethink just about everything we know about the art of songwriting. They may even make us rethink ourselves.

“How are you gonna win if you ain’t right within?”

‘Doo Woop (That Thing)’

Woah, that one is a little too personal. There is no denying that we can all be a little more kind to ourselves each day. How are we to move forward in life, whether that’s in our career or personal lives, if we do not believe in ourselves? Self-confidence is key 🔑 Never forget that you are amazing, inside and out, and that your dreams are never too large!

“Wisdom is better than silver and gold”

‘Lost Ones’

Yet again, Ms. Lauryn Hill is teaching us the importance of keeping a strong mind 🧠. Always place the value of education and knowledge above the value of material items. The more we accumulate the less fulfilled we will feel in life (unless of course, we are talking about tickets to her tour!).

“And I made up my mind to define my own destiny”

‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Each individual has a different and unique life. Always remember to write your own story, without the pressure from peers. It’s often hard to forget that our path is different from our friends. There is no such thing as better or worse, and the chapter of life you are currently writing for yourself is the one that is meant to be. Manifest your dreams into reality, and never give up! ✨

“See what you give is just what you get”

‘Superstar’

Being selfish and greedy will get you nowhere. Rather, Ms. Lauryn Hill encourages her fans to focus on kindness, joy, and empathy towards others 🫰. What you give is what you get, and kindness will always come back around in the times you may need it most. See someone alone at a concert? Approach them and ask them to join you and your besties, who knows they might become your new future concert buddy!

“I wrote these words for everyone who struggles in their youth, who won’t accept deception instead of what is truth”

‘Everything Is Everything’

For our final lesson, we are taking notes on ourselves. More specifically, what we struggle with and why. Ms. Lauryn Hill inspires us to dig deep within our feelings, even if they are hard to face. The struggles we face as kids and young adults do not make us isolated; they make us the same. Whether we know it or not, we are all connected by the daily hardships that make us feel alone. We are not alone, and that is the truth.

Class is officially concluded, but we are not done learning from the best teacher around, Ms. Lauryn Hill! Interested in taking the next course?
