Interview: Meet Sad-Girl Pop Artist JILL

We at The Honey POP take our job of telling you about the best up-and-coming artists seriously. So obviously, we have to tell you about alt-pop artist, JILL. We had the amazing opportunity to chat with her about her current and upcoming music, as well as her musical inspirations, and being a fellow Swiftie. And be sure to read until the end for a special surprise!

Hello and welcome to The Honey POP! We’re so excited to have you! For our readers who may not know who you are, can you tell us a little about yourself?Thank you so much for having me! I’m a 29 year old singer-songwriter from Manchester. I released my debut album, Aftermath, earlier this year; a pop-folk exploration of love, loss and toxic relationships. My latest single, ‘But You Lied,’ and the new music I’m working on enters more of a dreamy synth-pop soundscape, and I can’t wait to share it with you!

When did you know you wanted to start creating your own music? Which artist(s) inspired you the most at the time?
I spent my childhood listening to incredible female vocalists: Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Avril Lavigne, Whitney Houston, to name a few, who hugely inspired me musically. The wholeness I felt singing my heart out to ‘Who Knew’ by P!nk and ‘Because of You’ by Kelly Clarkson; that’s when I knew I wanted to write music.

Which artists currently inspire you?
Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, Griff, Reneé Rapp, Olivia Rodrigo, SELF ESTEEM, & Holly Humberstone. I’m in love with the stories these incredible female artists tell through their music, particularly Taylor. Her ability to craft highly addictive, upbeat pop melodies with earth-shatteringly heartbreaking lyrics is something I’ve taken huge inspiration from for my second album.

We know that you’re a fellow Swiftie. Which era do you think best represents yourself?
Musically, I’d say a mix of Folklore and Midnights. Aesthetically, Reputation

What does your songwriting process look like?
The starting point can be anything: a feeling, an experience, a memory, a fleeting thought, or a conversation. Usually when I’m writing a song it’s because I need to get something off my chest / express a feeling, so the lyrics often come flowing out; almost like I’m writing in a diary. Sometimes the idea for a song can come at an inconvenient time; i.e., when I’m driving, and I have to pull over to note down lyrics!
I also work collaboratively with my producer George Fitzgibbon who is a master at crafting addictive pop melodies for me to write over.

What do you hope listeners take away from your new song, ‘But You Lied?’
You can’t take the word of a hustler! Charming people are very good at explaining away legitimate concerns. Trust your instincts.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as an artist, so far?
Releasing my debut album Aftermath this year was a huge moment for me and something I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time. Being able to share music that I’ve written is so special to me; and singing my songs to a room full of people at my album release party – and have them singing back – was a dream come true.

What’s your dream venue to play at one day?
Growing up in Manchester, I always imagined what it would be like to play the MEN Arena – now the AO Arena. A girl can dream!

What can we expect from you in 2024?
A brand new album full of dreamy pop soundscapes, self-reflection, and the ever-present struggle of existing through heartbreak, turmoil and angst.
