Interview: Our Hearts ‘Hurt A Little’ Thanks to Indi Star!

We know you, Honeybees! Your playlist needs a little bit of a revamp, and we’ve got the artist for you: Indi Star. One of the most promising young artists of the next generation (take our word for it,) Indi Star is an incredible vocalist, songwriter, and so much more! From her days on Kidz Bop to now, she’s had an impressive journey with zero signs of stopping. So go ahead, come learn more about Indi Star we promise it won’t hurt… or maybe just a little!

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us! For any of our readers who might not be familiar, can you tell us a little bit about your music journey? What made you first want to pursue music?
Thank you for having me! I started out as a dancer, and the studio I danced at offered voice lessons, so I started with that. I really enjoyed it, and then mixing my dancing with music and performing led me to audition for Kidz Bop when I was 11. I was chosen to join Kidz Bop and decided to pursue a solo career in music once I left!

As you’ve continued to develop as an artist, who were some of your inspirations? How do you feel you’ve grown since you first began your career?
I started in the music industry very young, so I have definitely matured a lot since being in Kidz Bop, both in my music and personally. I feel that I am really starting to find my own personal musical style. I love so many different kinds of music, but my biggest inspiration has probably been Taylor Swift because of her ability to tell such amazing stories through her music.

Your latest single, ‘Hurt A Little,’ not only taps into the sad emotions of heartbreak but the very natural, angry reactions that many of our readers can relate to. Was it difficult tapping into all of those layers through your lyrics? What do you hope your listeners can take away from the song?
Writing and creating a song can be pretty emotional because you really do have to tap into your own (sometimes) painful emotions and tell the story. I love sharing my experience with my audience, though, because it is such a healing way to express those emotions and connect with others who have shared a similar experience.

‘Hurt A Little’

My team and I came up with the concept of incorporating a voodoo doll to have a physical object to show the pain and vengeance of the hurt. We shopped it out to some different directors and got back the treatment you see in the video. Incorporating the voodoo doll and blending it with a campy horror theme was such a fun direction to take the music video.

We’re no love experts, but we know a thing or two about breakups, and they can be tough. For our readers, what’s the best piece of advice you can share if they’re going through a breakup of their own?
Breakups can be tough! You just always have to remember that you are breaking up for a reason. If you feel it’s not going to work out or it’s not worth the effort to try to repair, it may be the time to let it go. If there are ongoing issues that don’t get addressed, those issues will always be there, and it might be time to move on. There are so many amazing people out there to meet, and it’s not worth staying with someone who doesn’t treat you right, especially when you are still young!

Quick, this or that! Would you rather choose revenge or forgiveness? Why?
Oof. I would want to choose revenge, but I would most likely pick forgiveness. I just don’t like hurting people, and it would eat at me even if it was well deserved. I would choose forgiveness because it would be better for my mental health in the long run!

‘Hurt A Little’ is an amazing track, but honestly, we love a lot of your discography. In the spirit of one of our favorites, ‘Victory,’ what do you think has been your greatest victory so far, either personally or professionally?
Thank you! Victory is such a beautiful song. I think my greatest victory thus far in my career is that I am still growing and working hard on pursuing my dreams of being a performer! I am soon to be 17, but I have been in the industry already for about nine years. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I am still moving forward and reaching new milestones and accomplishments.

‘Victory’

I love looking back at all my songs and not only seeing my progression, but also remembering the times in my life when those songs came out and how they made me feel.

We told you ours, now we have to ask: do you have a favorite song you’ve written? If so, why?
Honestly, I think “Hurt A Little” is probably my favorite to date because I just feel that with each new song I put out, I am more and more discovering my own musical style and footprint.

You’re also an actress and a dancer, both extremely creative careers. But we’d like to know, if you weren’t in this industry, what would be your dream job?
Probably something still in the arts, maybe a fashion designer or painter? I am a pretty shy person in my personal life, and I love the ability to share myself through the arts.
