The final weeks of December are nearing, which means it’s time to transition from the colors red and green and into The Color Purple 💜 .

Dropping on Christmas Day, the new adaptation of The Color Purple has us so excited to head back into the movie theaters! On top of that, voices like H.E.R, Usher, Alicia Keys, Coco Jones, and more are featured on the soundtrack along with 37 other unforgettable tracks. Although we wish we could break down each song, we’d be here forever. Read along to find out what our favorite 10 tracks are and why we will be lining up outside our local AMC 🍿the morning it hits the screen!

‘When I Can’t Do Better’ – Mary J. Blige

Track #24 on the soundtrack is one of our favorites, with little to no explanation needed. There is no doubt that Mary J. Blige can’t do any better than she already is! She sings to a higher power, or maybe just to herself, during a moment of weakness, begging for support and prayers. 🙏

“When it gets dark and it just don’t come easy / ‘Cause it’s too hard and we’re too far gone / Stay with me now, oh / Pray for me now.”

Her ability to become vulnerable and story-tell through her vocals is incredibly moving, and we can’t wait to hear this song on the big screen.

‘You See Me’ – Coco Jones

Our queen Coco is back and better than ever! She’s been killing the game across both the music and film industries lately and we are so here for it! Most notably, we loved her feature on Renee Rapp’s ‘Tummy Hurts.’ This song, however, is a change of pace. For the movie, she sings “Baby, you see me,” acknowledging the love she has for someone else and the love they give back. Through all flaws and faults, this person doesn’t walk away or falter from the relationship. “I’ve never felt more loved by anyone,” Coco sings.

“Tear stains runnin’ down my face / Your hands wiping them away / Even on the worst of days / With you, I feel safe.”

Track #28 shows off Coco’s versatility, one of the reasons why we love her (and this song!) so much!

‘All I Need’ – Jennifer Hudson

If you thought the lineup of iconic singers couldn’t get any better, you were sorely mistaken. Track #31 holds the angelic 👼voice of Jennifer Hudson. This song is about self-love and how you are your own best friend. Jennifer encourages us to stop looking for a love that will be unfulfilling, but rather look inside ourselves and learn to love every inch of what we already have! Preach, girl!

“I am all I need for real / Now I see that what I wanted in you was always in me / For real.”

All we need is Jennifer Hudson!

‘I’m Here’ – Fantasia

Fantasia is here and not going anywhere! Playing the iconic role of Celie in The Color Purple, we know without a doubt that Fantasia will eat up the role and leave no crumbs! Track #15 brings listeners along a soulful journey of preservation and courageousness.

“But most of all / I’m thankful for / Lovin’ who I really am / I’m beautiful / Yes, I’m beautiful / And I’m here.”

Despite her continuous setbacks, we find Celie (Fantasia) singing about each and everything that she holds dear to her heart, and that no one can take away from her – her sister, house, breath, and most importantly, herself.

‘Risk It All’ – Usher and H.E.R

When The Color Purple promised an iconic lineup, they delivered! Both Usher and H.E.R hit the studio to record ‘Risk It All,’ a song about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone when it comes to love 💖, even if it means failure is the result.

“Feeling like I’m bound to fall / Close my eyes / Baby, I would risk it all / Just to be in love / I just wanna be in love / Be in love.”

Track #19 wows us with powerful vocals that leave us wanting more from this powerhouse duo!

‘Lifeline’ – Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys is certainly our ‘Lifeline’ and one of those artists we turn to when we need some good music to cry to, or simply to jam out to. Track #21 tells the story of unconditional love, which is certainly a theme throughout the music for The Color Purple. No matter the weather ⛈️, the love will be there and won’t falter.

“I can be your lifeline / Stay with you ’til the sunrise / When you’re low / It don’t mean you’re alone / I’l be by your side / Oh, I can be the reason / That you don’t feel your demons / When you’re low / It don’t mean you’re alone / I’ll be by your side.”

This song brings us to tears, but we’ll be honest, most Alicia Keys songs do that to us! 🥹

‘Finally’ – Jorja Smith

When we saw Jorja Smith’s name on the soundtrack, we said ‘Finally!’ Track #22 brings glory and praise to a higher power, thanking the universe for prosperity and good fortune. “I’m lovin’ me finally,” she sings. The song opens with a choir of praise but then begins to speed up as Jorjia’s vocals come in. A moment of celebration, we are so excited to see how this song appears on the big screen!

“Something’s happennin’ deep in my soul (In me) / Things are workin’ out, I got control (In me) / I’m givin’ grace to every flaw that I own (In me) / What a sight to see, wow.”

Our Hearts Are ‘Hard As Stone,’ But They Melt Listening To Jake Kohn

Jorja’s stunning vocals are sure to make your spine tingle, but that’s not any new news we didn’t already know.

‘Huckleberry Pie’ – Halle

Our princess in every space and time 👑. We were blessed with the release of The Little Mermaid earlier this year, and now Halle hits the screens one more time for a performance that we predict will take home some awards. We are so grateful she was able to have some songs of her own on this track! Track #1 opens the soundtrack beautifully, and even though the song is short, it’s sweet and cooked to perfection 🥧.

“Sure ‘nough, sun gon’ shine / Gon’ be grown ladies of the marryin’ kind / Sure ‘nough, moon gon’ rise / Like a huckleberry pie in the middle of the sky / Gon’ be alright, gon’ be alright.”

‘There Will Come A Day’ – Celeste

Will there ever come a day that we don’t obsess over Celeste!? The answer is no, folks. Track #25 is about waiting for the day to come – a day of success when all of your wishes come true.

“Is only a matter of timin’ / When I’m only just survivin’ / When the clouds break / And now I too late / There will come a day, there will come a day.”

Celeste’s angelic voice takes us on an emotional journey that ends in tears and joy!

‘Eternity’ – October London

Our last song comes at the end of the soundtrack, as track #34. October London is one face we are so, so excited to see on the big screen! ‘Eternity’ tells the story of two people in love, and how that love will last forever. The simplicity of waking up in the morning to the face of the one you love 💞 is something that we wish we could relate to, but is beautiful in the song nonetheless.

“When the sun hits your gorgeous face / In the mornin’ when you wake / You look at me with those, those eyes of yours, and / I could just lay in bed all day / Oh, it’s such an honor / To be the man you, the man you adore / Your love enriches me, yeah / Girl, without you, without you, I’m poor.”
