Interview: See What All The Hype Is With Brooklyn Band, The Sees!

We’re buzzing with excitement over here at THP because we have an up-and-coming band we just have to tell you about: The Sees! This Brooklyn based band defies the boundaries of genres and we’re absolutely here for it! We recommend you listen for yourselves to see what we mean. We got the chance to chat with them about their inspirations, their debut album and more!

Hello and welcome to The Honey POP, we’re so happy to have you! For our readers who might not know who you are, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
The Sees is a Brooklyn based rock band that came together in the fall of 2022. We are all friends and have played in various bands/projects throughout the years. Over the past year The Sees played a few shows and released our first album, Conversations With My Future Self.

Who are your musical influences?
Radiohead, The Beatles, IDLES, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, The Cure, INXS, LCD Soundsystem, Wilco, The Smiths, Yo La Tengo, etc.

What does your creative process look like, in terms of writing and recording?
I like to write at home on acoustic guitar and record all my ideas on my iPhone. From there I will get a handle on an arrangement, melody and overall feel for the song then bring it to the band to work on collectively.

As far as recording goes, I like to get a handful of songs together that we feel good about and rehearse them to death. We record upstate at my friend/co-producer (Graham Stone) studio called Stone Studios. We record live to capture the drums and bass. I will then record my guitars and vocals later in addition to synths, keys, other sounds.

You just recently released your debut album, Conversations With My Future Self. Congratulations! What’s your favorite song off of the album and why?
That’s always a tough question because I enjoy all our material. If I didn’t, we wouldn’t record it! ‘End Of Scene’ has been an experience writing and recording, it’s such a heavy tune. I had this idea to record synthesizers that sounded like an 80’s John Carpenter horror soundtrack like The Thing and They Live which added another dimension to an already full sounding song. The combination of the different sections, synths and guitar solo at the end makes me love playing this song.

What would you say is the ideal way for someone to listen to the album on their first listen?
Start to finish. Loud. It is a concept record of the passage of time and the songs are designed to flow into one another, especially ‘Moments’ into ‘End Of Scene.’

What do you hope listeners take away from the album?
The diversity of the songs. I listen to a variety of music and write in a way that I do not try to limit what I want to accomplish musically. The eventual take away is the want for more music from us, which will happen!

You just recently had your album release party. That’s so exciting! What can fans expect at your shows?
We want fans to have an experience that is high energy but can also dance, laugh, and enjoy. Live music is an exploration and collective communal experience that we want fans to be excited about.

On your website’s bio, it says that you have a “shared history that goes back years,” What was the moment where you decided you wanted to be in a band together?
I have been in numerous bands throughout the years and recently Yoni and I played in another band called Cape Francis. Alex and I have been friends forever and he was a touring bassist but was not actively playing. Tim similarly was a touring drummer but was not in a project. We got together to jam in August 2022 and after playing some Sabbath and Zeppelin came out of the studio feeling good. I always am looking to be in a project/band so booked another sessions and asked them if they wanted to make this a thing. Thus, The Sees was born…

What’s been your biggest accomplishment so far as a band?
Recording Conversations With My Future Self was huge for us. We did a lot in a short amount of time and recording a full-length album that we all are proud of is a big accomplishment.
