Today is a special day for the music industry, because it is the day that Lagoona Bloo releases her debut album, Underwater Bubble Pop. Lagoona is drag queen from New York City who has been making waves in the music scene since her first single, ‘Greedy With My Love,’ in 2021. And now, after many singles, an EP and a musical, Lagoona Bloo is finally giving us a full length album and we couldn’t be happier!
Underwater Bubble Pop is the perfect 90s and 2000s pop-inspired album we all needed to add to our summer playlists. The upbeat music paired with lyrics about empowerment and self-love make the perfect pop soundtrack to a “hot girl summer” we’ll remember forever.
So you can imagine how excited we are that we got to sit down with the mermaid pop star herself and talk all about Underwater Bubble Pop. And trust us when we say we seized the opportunity to pick Lagoona’s brain on this one!
Get To Know The Artist
Hi Lagoona, and welcome to The Honey POP! We’re super happy to have you here. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! So, just to start us off, can you introduce yourself to our readers who may be discovering you for the first time?
The pleasure is mine – thank you for having me! Hey, ya’ll, I’m mermaid pop star, Lagoona Bloo! I’m a singer, songwriter, and drag queen making my way as a Latin queer independent artist. I am super excited about my new album Underwater Bubble Pop!
If you could tell your younger self from ten years ago anything, what would you say? And if you could ask your older self ten years into the future anything, what would you ask?
Oh my gosh… Well, the first thing I’d do is give myself a real big hug and say “YOU ARE DOING IT! Everything’s gonna be okay! YOU are living a life that you can’t even imagine yet! It won’t be easy, but behind every obstacle will be a beautiful lesson and it will be worth it!”
And, honestly, I don’t think I’d ask MY future self anything. I think I’m discovering the beauty in accepting the unknown. No spoilers, please. 🙂
On top of being a very successful singer, you have also taken the stage during Alaska Thunderf*ck’s Drag: The Musical as Tuna Turner, a role you originated. How did you get involved with the project and how was the process of creating Tuna?
Alaska and I became friends after she began inviting me to perform in her show DIVATRONIC back in 2018! I love her so much. She has always been a champion for me, and I am so grateful for her because she has always seen me and made space for me.
Creating Tuna Turner was literally a dream! Alaska asked if I would be interested in recording the vocals for Tuna for the studio cast recording in 2021 and the rest was history. I’ve been with the production ever since and it’s been such a dream to bring not only my drag but my Mexican heritage to this role! Tuna Turner is fully the embodiment of my mother, which is beautiful for me because in a way, I feel that my mom lives on through my drag.
You have a song called ‘Elle Woods,’ which has one of our favorite music videos ever, by the way. If you could cast yourself in a production of Legally Blonde, what role would you love to play? And who would you like to have on stage with you in other roles?
Thank you!! AND YES OMG PAULETTE IS A DREAM ROLE of mine! Legally Blonde is one of my favorite musicals and, for as long as I’ve been doing drag, I have wanted to play that part. I mean, a Broadway Revival would be great, RIGHT? Let’s make it happen! And, honestly, if i could pick anyone to share any stage with, I’d reunite with my sisters Jan and Rosé from our girl group, Stephanie’s Child!
Underwater Bubble Pop
Where did the idea to make versions of ‘Underwater Bubble Pop,’ in both English and Spanish come from? And what did you think was the biggest challenge in making these two versions?
For as long as I have been making music, I always knew that I wanted to write a track called ‘Underwater Bubble Pop.’ I wanted to truly introduce myself as what I’ve always branded myself: The Mermaid Pop Star. ‘Burbuja Pop’ is my first release in Spanish and feels like my introduction as a Latin queer pop artist. It is incredibly special to me! I was inspired by one of my favorite Shakira albums Laundry Service and the way she had lead singles in both English and Spanish – videos and everything. It impacted me so much because, though I grew up speaking Spanish fluently, I wasn’t exposed to much music in Spanish until this album.
So, when I was writing this track, I immediately knew I wanted to do the same! The hardest part was definitely creating the music videos for both songs. We had multiple shoot days, multiple sets, and multiple takes in two languages. And then editing with my incredible director, Austin Nunes was a tedious but incredibly rewarding task.
You’ve recently toured with Alaska Thunderf*ck through North America and opened for Vincint and Aqua at the start of their world tour. How do you imagine a Lagoona Bloo world tour would be? Where would you like to perform, who would be the perfect opening act, things like that.
THE UNDERWATER BUBBLE POP BALL! It would be so much FUN! I mean, the dream would be a video screen wall and a giant clam set piece that opens up! Starting as a mermaid and ending as the Pop Star Fantasy of all fantasies… it would have full choreo, costume changes, and the story of a little mermaid finding her way on a journey of love, loss, and self-discovery! My opening acts would be nothing but incredible drag and queer artists; it would be a dream to create space for other artists like me. And dream venue? Madison Square Garden!
Speaking of Alaska, she is on Underwater Bubble Pop singing a cover of ‘Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!’ by the Vengaboys with you, which must have been an awesome experience to record. Who are some other artists you would like to collaborate with?
It was so fun to have her on the record and, honestly, such an honor! I actually just recorded a new single with one of my long-time faves and up and comers, Bentley Robles, which will be here sooner than you think. After a solo album, I am starving to work with and collab with as many artists as possible! I’d love to work with ZEE Machine, Madison Rose, or Chrissy Chlapecka. My absolute dream collabs would be Kim Petras, Vincint, and Pabllo Vittar.
Underwater Bubble Pop is all about self-confidence and self-love, what is your favorite lyric from the album?
I think my favorite verse on the album is Verse 2 of Track 4 – ‘Mimosa’
“Renaissance woman
Yeah I am the one
Disney eyes talking
Thick thighs stay walking now
I love myself self
Top of the shelf shelf
Champagne and chill chill
I got the bill”
‘Mimosa’ was the first track we wrote for the album and I was just beginning this journey of self-love. This verse for some reason just stuck to me. It’s an affirmation of self, of my talent, my worth, my eyes, and my thighs! Haha! Reading them back on paper like this may make them seem superficial but, for me, the intention comes from a genuine place of peace in speaking these things over myself.
What Comes Next?
What can we expect in the future from Miss Lagoona Bloo?
MUSIC! MUSIC! MUSIC! I am so elated to say that I have a ton of music coming your way. I have been really investing so much time and effort into these projects and watching all of it come together is so exciting for me! I am growing so much not only as an artist but as a person. Music has always been a healing part of my life and I am so inspired now, more than ever, to continue on this path because I love it so much! It makes me happy and I hope it resonates with pop music lovers in the very same way!
And to finish off, since we are The Honey POP, we’d love to end this interview with a ‘Sticky Sweet’ message to our readers…
Yes, of course! A little message of light and love to every single one of you. You are The Motherf*cking One! I began saying that to myself a few years ago, so much so that I had to write a song about it, but this daily mantra really helped me build confidence and love. So, I encourage you to remind yourself every day that you are TMFO. You deserve it! You are worthy of it. Sending a lot of love and a big mermaid hug! Thank you so much for having me!
