Who doesn’t love a good trilogy? We at THP have read our fair share of book trilogies, several of which have reached their conclusions this year, like Tahereh Mafi’s This Woven Kingdom series and Victoria Aveyard’s Realm Breaker series. Today, we’re reviewing another epic conclusion to a fantasy series: Burning Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber.
Burning Crowns wraps up Doyle and Webber’s Twin Crowns series in an ever-romantic, action-packed ending! (We recommend reading the first two books in the series if you haven’t yet.) The twin queens of Eana, Wren and Rose, have been suffering from the awakening of their cursed ancestor, Oonagh Starcrest. They must find ways to break their curse and defeat Oonagh before she claims Eana for herself.
Burning Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber gives us everything we wanted in the third and final book, and here are just three reasons why we love it!

Book Overview
Content Warnings: war, torture, blood, death, character death, animal death, murder, graphic depictions of violence, fires (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: Twin queens Rose & Wren survived the Battle for Anadawn and brought back magic to their kingdom. But danger lurks in Eana’s shadows.
Wren is troubled. Ever since she performed the blood spell on Prince Ansel, her magic has become unruly. Worse, the spell created a link between Wren and the very man she’s trying to forget: Icy King Alarik of Gevra. A curse is eating away at both of them. To fix it, they must journey to the northern mountains—under the watchful guard of Captain Tor Iversen—to consult with the Healer on High.
Rose is haunted. Waking one night to find her undead ancestor Oonagh Starcrest by her bed, she receives a warning: Surrender the throne—or face a war that will destroy Eana. With nowhere to turn and desperate to find a weapon to defeat Oonagh, Rose seeks help from Shen-Lo in the Sunkissed Kingdom, but what she finds there may break her heart.
As Oonagh threatens all Rose and Wren hold dear, it will take everything they have to save Eana—including a sacrifice they may not be prepared to make.
The Love Triangle
First, are you Team Tor or Team Alarik? After what happened in book two, it’s no surprise that Burning Crowns had us questioning whose team we were on the whole time. Queen Wren and King Alarik’s connection-slash-curse after casting a blood spell has brought them both pain and suffering. But they must find a cure together, even if it means getting closer than ever before. Tor can only help from the sidelines, ever the dutiful soldier. This love triangle pulled at our heartstrings, but we wouldn’t change a thing!
Rose’s Romance
Next, while we love the magic and fantasy elements in the book, we also can’t resist gushing about Rose’s relationship with Shen. Shen has been loyal to Rose since Day 1, but he also has new responsibilities as king of The Sunkissed Kingdom. And although their romance hits a bump due to a misunderstanding, Rose and Shen recover quickly! We were scared for a few chapters because it really wasn’t what it looked like, but it didn’t look promising for Shen. These two deserve the world after everything they’ve been through together!
The Ending (Spoilers Ahead!)
In the final battle of Burning Crowns, Wren and Rose must battle mind control, exhaustion, and nausea while fighting Oonagh. Wren’s love for Rose helped her overcome Oonagh’s grip on her mind. And her ultimate sacrifice cast a powerful spell that gave the twin queens the opening they needed. With their weapons, Night’s Edge and Daybreak (shout out Celeste), Wren and Rose break the curse and usher in a new era of peace and harmony. The ending even gives us details of their two love stories, leaving us so content and hopeful.
Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber’s Burning Crowns takes us on a whirlwind adventure across Eana to reach a satisfying ending full of sisterhood, love, and harmony.
