Surprise! Holly Humberstone just released reimagined versions of ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Antichrist.’ If you, like us, have barely gotten over these songs from her debut album Paint My Bedroom Black, your day just got 100% better. Who knew bringing Medium Build and Tiny Habits into the songs was exactly what we needed? And of course, we can’t forget about our old favorite ‘Into Your Room’ featuring MUNA. Now we can listen to all three together, and we’re in awe at how these songs just got even better. So if you love the angelic blend of Holly Humberstone, Medium Build, and Tiny Habits’s voices in ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Antichrist,’ allow us to introduce you to her other collaborations.
‘Superbloodmoon (Feat. D4vd)’
‘Superbloodmoon’ is a masterful combination of Holly’s dark style and d4vd’s smooth vocals. In Paint My Bedroom Black, Holly excels at telling a story that’s best heard in the dark of night. The imagery in this song paints this picture so vividly. ‘Superbloodmoon’ shows the aftermath of a night shared between two people, who both obsess and agonize over each other. There was no better way to tell this story than showing both sides of the conversation, as they marry the best and worst of their relationship.
Del Water Gap – ‘Cigarettes and Wine (Feat. Holly Humberstone)’
This song is a bit of a different style than Holly’s music, because she’s the one being featured in ‘Cigarettes and Wine.’ If you’re looking for more of an indie sound, this one may be for you. However, the lyrics are right up Holly’s alley! It’s about living in the moment and being young and foolish. Holly’s addition takes the song from one person who doesn’t want to grow up to two who are living life to the fullest together. Again, hearing two perspectives of the story gives it so much more depth.
Bombay Bicycle Club – ‘Diving (Feat. Holly Humberstone)’
This music video shows the story of a young couple happily enjoying each other’s company. Both voices in ‘Diving’ are light and playful, which fit perfectly into the joyful love story they’re telling. Holly is so perfect for this song because she’s able to be so dynamic. She can take any song from heartwarming to devastating to lighthearted, and right back again.
‘Into Your Room (With MUNA)’
Here’s an example of when Holly made a song so incredibly fun. And the inclusion of MUNA, known for being impossible not to dance to, makes it that much better. Even before MUNA’s verse, this version updates the instrumentals to a synth that you’d be likely to hear on MUNA’s discography. The result is a song that we can’t help but be excited about every time we hear it.
‘Antichrist (Feat. Tiny Habits)’
Now we get into the new releases. Stripping ‘Antichrist’ down and adding Tiny Habits’ graceful harmonies gives the song a whole new meaning. ‘Antichrist’ is already an emotionally vulnerable song, as Holly ponders where she went wrong in a relationship. But the original is darker and more angry. Tiny Habits forces us to confront the raw lyrics without a boisterous beat to hide behind.
‘Cocoon (Feat. Medium Build)’
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Again, making ‘Cocoon’ a collaboration with Medium Build transforms the song into a softer acoustic. Even with the stripped-back instrumentals, Medium Build manages to elevate the song to a more desperate, frustrated version of the original. Holly brings a quiet acceptance to her own version of the song while she sings about being “paralyzed for more than a week.” When Medium Build comes in, he sings about crying for help as if that’s exactly what he’s doing. What we love about this is that both songs have different meanings now, and we can listen to either based on our mood.
Holly Humberstone has never participated in a collaboration if it doesn’t add something to the song, and ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Antichrist’ are no exception. And we are so in love with everything her collabs have brought us. But they’re not all Holly has going on! She’s heading out on her US headline tour this month.
