Hi SWEET REVENGE, congratulations on your debut with ‘Might Just!’ How does it feel to officially release your first song and let it out onto the global music scene?
AGNES: Thank you so much! It feels so UNREAL!! Seeing our song and name pop up on Spotify after all these years of working towards this moment… I feel so grateful, so excited, super emotional, but so ready!
ASAMI: Feels surreal!! We’ve been training together for 6 years, and seeing everything come together is definitely very moving, and now I feel like we’re officially starting!!
LARISSA: Thank you so much!!! The feeling is surreal… It’s been 6 years since our audition, and we’ve been working towards this moment for a very long time, so the fact that our first single is out everywhere feels absolutely surreal!!
‘Might Just’
What does ‘Might Just’ mean to you? What do you hope fans take away from the song and its lyrics?
AGNES: This song will forever be our debut song, so for that reason, it will always be the most special song to us. Listening to ‘Might Just’ just makes me happy each time. I’ve heard it soooo many times already of course, but I just can’t get sick of it. It’s fun, playful, teasing. I especially love the teasing part of the lyrics and I think that in combination with the playful sound, it will have the fans listening to this song on repeat!
ASAMI: SWEET REVENGE is a lot about female empowerment, and the way we sing and dance, we really try to portray that message. ‘Might Just’ from the word itself, it’s very teasing, but also “Might just let you touch me, might just let you love me” is being in control of situations, so having your strong opinion and being vulnerable is something I want to deliver across from this song.
LARISSA: From the moment we were in the studio witnessing ‘Might Just’ get made to recording it, we all knew this would be the first single! It’s such a fun song, and I hope everyone will enjoy listening to it as much as we do! And if you listen to the lyrics, it’s also very female empowering, and that’s definitely something we stand for and want to express in our songs!!
How do you feel ‘Might Just’ sets the tone for what we can expect from SWEET REVENGE and your future releases?
AGNES: That when you hear our music you just want to get up and dance!
ASAMI: ‘Might Just’ is only the beginning; we have a lot of things already prepared for everyone, but one thing I can say is SWEET REVENGE gives you much more than what you expect!! So please stay tuned for more!!
LARISSA: We are a very international group. All 3 of us are very different and come from different places. We brought all of that together and trained in Japan, Holland, and LA these last 6 years. Our music represents who we are and the places we’ve experienced! We hope everyone will love it as much as we do, and it will make them happy listening to it!
Alongside ‘Might Just,’ you’re also giving us an incredible video directed by Amber Park, with characters by Akaya Ohira and avatars made by Active Theory! What was it like to work with so many talented creatives on the video?
AGNES: It was such an honor working with so many talented, creative people. Having my own avatar, come on… Isn’t that everyone’s dream? I will never forget the first time I saw Ayaka-san’s first sketch of our avatars. I immediately fell in love! Seeing this music video come together was amazing to watch! It gave me 2000s vibes, and I just wanted to watch it over and over again. There’s so much to see, and every time I watch it, I see something new. I’m so thankful for the team; they did an amazing job.
ASAMI: Thankfully, we have a lot of great creative people in our team and also people that take care of all the communication between, so we couldn’t have made anything without them, so thank you to all!! But it was definitely exciting seeing our avatars and seeing the kawaii music video edits come together. Still in awe with the music video and the thought of having my own avatar is insane!
LARISSA: When we received the concept ideas from Amber Park, the first avatar sketches from Ayaka Ohira, and eventually saw the moving avatars from Active Theory, we were all so excited! It was a new concept that we could never have dreamed of… Bringing so many aspects together and mixing real life and the virtual world! We’re so grateful to everyone who has worked so hard on this music video!!!
It must have been so fun on the set of ‘Might Just!’ What are your favorite memories from making the video?
AGNES: My favorite moment is honestly just being with my girls and the fact that this was our first music video. That made it very special, so we were just so excited that we made the shooting day a lot of fun on and off set.
ASAMI: We always make ourselves at home anywhere and because we had a lot of individual shoots, we hyped each other. My favorite memory on set was seeing AGNES and LARISSA’s shoots because knowing them from 6 years ago, seeing how far they’ve come, and being able to share my dreams with them is always a feeling I am grateful for, and the MV shoots really reassured me with that.
LARISSA: Working on projects is always fun because we’re together! That’s the best part of being in a group: you’re always in it together! My favorite part was watching AGNES and ASAMI film their scenes and then eat ice cream in between filming or joking around together! If you watch our Behind the Scenes videos, you will see what I’m talking about 😉
Preparing For Their Debut
What has been the most challenging part of preparing for your debut, and what has been your favorite part?
AGNES: The most challenging part has definitely been having patience and trusting in the process and the right timing. The past 6 years haven’t always been easy, as it should, wanting to reach a dream as big as ours. Grinding through all the training days, day after day, even though we didn’t know when we would debut, would sometimes be hard but having my girls by my side on all those days made it more than worth it. I don’t think we should have debuted any sooner. We needed every obstacle that was thrown our way to be ready to present the world the best version of SWEET REVENGE possible. We feel more than ready now!
ASAMI: All the dance and vocal classes from 6 years ago, and for me, I’ve started training from when I was 14, so almost 10 years of training was really tough!! But also having to grind through all of the trainings was definitely challenging, and having Covid in between and having to stay home was also very hard.
LARISSA: It definitely hasn’t always been easy, and there have been many ups and downs these last 6 years… But in the end, we’ve always believed in this group and in each other, so hearing we were finally debuting was very special! My favorite part about it was doing it together and going through everything together with my members!!
You got to work with AFROJACK and VERBAL during your audition process, which must have been an amazing experience! What was the audition process like? Is there anything you learned during that time that you’ve carried with you?
AGNES: I learned so much through the audition process. I think the biggest lesson I learned is that you can always push yourself more than you think you can and THAT is where you grow. A lot of people stop pushing when they are at 90% and think they’ve reached their limit, but if you push beyond that, you really feel and see how much more you can do. So I learned to always push for that extra 10 percent.
ASAMI: I took the audition in Tokyo since I was already training in the company. I saw a flyer and decided to take it. LARISSA and AGNES took it in the Netherlands. We met for the first time in the 3rd round when we had a week of boot camp. We had to prepare a song, group dance performance and one dance and vocal performance. Most of the girls were not experienced with dancing before, so I got to help out a little and in the process I met Afrojack, and he gave me a couple advices!
It was my first time training with girls from all over the world, so I had to explain a lot of things in English. And they also taught me things during the camp, so opening up and taking and giving advices and criticism was eye-opening for me!!
LARISSA: It was actually my very first audition, and I took it in secret (only my family knew) without much experience in singing or dancing… So, I never expected to be here today, but it was always my biggest dream to become an artist! Since I didn’t have much experience, I had to learn a lot, so the biggest thing I’ve carried with me since then is: “Prove them wrong.” I worked really hard and never gave up. I’m so grateful to our company, LDH, to have the opportunity to grow into the artist I am today!
Style And Inspiration
Inspired by the “Tiffany locking it, Cartier shopping it” lyric from ‘Might Just,’ we wanted to talk about your standout style for a moment! Where do you get fashion inspo?
AGNES: I love that… ! Unfortunately we can’t shop at Tiffany’s or Cartier yet, but we’re manifesting it by putting it in our first single & we gotta dream big right! 😉 My fashion inspo definitely changed once I started dancing 6 years ago, 6 days a week. It became more hip-hop and street, and I love it because, honestly, I need my clothes to feel comfy. That’s very important to me lol. I love a good low-waisted jeans/pants with a cute crop top & shoulder bag. I also love big sweaters and anything purple will do! And I love African prints, so I am a big fan of the brand Vlisco, which I dream to collaborate with one day. A street brand I really love and wear a lot is Urban Outfitters.
ASAMI: I love fashion, and I especially love shoes! My favorite color is black, so I love wearing dark colored clothes, but also sometimes having a pop of color!! I would say my style is street style but including a little gothic and cyber style. My fashion inspo is Maggie Lindemann; I always love her fit and how it fits her so much!!
LARISSA: I love going on Pinterest and getting outfit ideas from there, or shopping in Harajuku! These days I love wearing oversized T-shirts or sport jerseys with boots or heels!
Who do you each consider your musical influences, or artists you listen to and can’t help but think, “wow, I wanna do what they’re doing?”
AGNES: Beyoncé! Her performances, live shows, work ethic, and skills are something I’ve looked up to since I was a kid and always will!
ASAMI: Brandy and SWV are my all-time, go-to artists that I love and have been inspired from a young age! Their groove and tone is just incredible. Artist-wise, I would say Travis Scott. His creativity, his fashion style, and his music; everything is such a great package I’m always inspired by his creativity.
LARISSA: After the third audition round, while we were waiting to hear back if we made it through or not, I discovered BTS and started watching their music videos and performances. It gave me an example of being in a group, dancing and singing to make the best music and performances! I hadn’t seen that before, so that’s when I realized that this was really what I wanted to do!!
All Things Sweet
At The Honey POP, we love all things sweet, and it’s part of your name as well! Could you each say something sweet about your fellow members?
AGNES: LARISSA is the literal definition of sweet. She is truly the sweetest person I’ve ever met, so caring, always smiling & always kind to everyone! She’ s that person that will be at my door at 3am without any questions if I would need her.
ASAMI has the most beautiful heart and will always be there for you! Unless you do her dirty, then you’re definitely on her revenge list, and you will never come off. But that’s what I love about her. She is super real: what you see is what you get!
ASAMI: AGNES, from the first time I met her she’s always been the kindest and most caring girl! She’s the group’s leader in vocals. She puts in the time to help us sound better, and our songs wouldn’t have sounded this good without her!
LARISSA is also the sweetest girl, she’s the one to always keep us feeling comfortable! She makes sure everyone is feeling alright or always takes care of us. She is the group’s youngest, but I would say she is also the most well organized!!!
LARISSA: We often joke about me being the “SWEET” part of our name and AGNES and ASAMI being the “REVENGE” part of our name, but they are actually both the sweetest girls you will ever meet! They both care so deeply, and I feel so lucky to be in a group with them!! I am who I am today because of them! They are the most talented girls I know, and I can’t wait for the world to witness that too!
What’s a SWEET dream you hope to achieve this year as SWEET REVENGE?
AGNES: I love this question! My SWEET dream would be for this year to be able to be on some kind of tour, so we can perform a lot and meet a lot of fans!
ASAMI: Honestly, making music with LARISSA and AGNES and performing with them is always my dream, so I really hope we’ll have more opportunities to be able to perform together! I would definitely love to perform abroad this year!
LARISSA: I hope we get to perform a lot and meet a lot of new people! That’s my favorite part about being an artist so I hope a lot of people can find joy in our music, our performances, and in meeting us!!!
Is there anything else you’d like to mention or say to your fans that the questions didn’t touch on?
AGNES: That the moment I see a fan sing and dance ‘Might Just,’ I will cry! And I don’t cry easily. That will truly be a dream come true.
ASAMI: We are so excited for ‘Might Just’ to be heard by everyone and everywhere, so please love it and enjoy listening! Thank you for always supporting us and in the future, we hope to give back to everyone!!
LARISSA: I hope that listening to ‘Might Just’ and watching our music video will make you happy and excited! We will do our best to become artists that you want to support and follow!
You heard the girls, honeybees! It’s time to listen to ‘Might Just’ and learn the dance! Thank you so much to SWEET REVENGE for answering our questions and lighting up our playlists with ‘Might Just!’
