Lately, we’ve been vibing to alt-pop band, Marina City. Their latest single ‘I’m So Broke’ was an absolute banger and we can’t wait because they have more new music on the way. In the meantime, we’re so stoked to bring you a sweet exclusive interview with their vocalist, Ryan Argast where we talk all about their latest single, touring, and more! Let’s dive right in!
Hi and welcome to The Honey POP! We’re so excited to have you. Could you introduce yourselves?
Thank you so much for having us!! We are big fans of yours! I’m Ryan. I sing in the band and write the lyrics
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I have so many I would love to collaborate with but if I was to choose one right now it would be Jack Antinoff I think he would elevate our songwriting in many ways whether it’s off the wall lyrics, interesting melodies, or distinguished production. I think we would create something special.
You just released a new single, ‘I’m So Broke.’ What was the writing and recording process like?
I’d love to say it was easy and maybe in some ways it was when we really started rolling but we wrote this song half a dozen times. We knew what we wanted to say but we were really self conscious on how it would be perceived or if it would come off cheesy. The lyrics are purposefully stark. It’s supposed to evoke a laugh because as a society we are funny. We just wanted the listener to know we are in on the joke too.
Do you have a favorite lyric from it?
“You’re not racist you just don’t date geminis.” I feel like this is pretty self explanatory and everyone knows exactly the person we are talking about.
You’re releasing more music this summer, which we’re so excited for! In three words, how would you describe your new music?
anthemic, cutting, captivating
How is this new era of Marina City different than previous ones?
Personally I feel like we are really finding our footing. We were aggressive early in our career then went pop but now I feel like we are finding a fun mix between our previous eras. This is creating a more signature sound that I know we all are excited to continue exploring. I think there are less voices in our ears on who we are supposed to be. The three of us are older, more refined, understand who we are, and understand the roles we play in the band which helps make our signature sound.
You have some headlining shows coming up. What can fans expect at a Marina City show?
Our live shows are our biggest strength and our favorite part of MC. Fans can expect a high energy, interactive, explosive performance that makes you hoarse from singing too loudly and maybe even sore from dancing.
What’s one of your past favorite show memories?
My grandfather passed away while we were on tour. The funeral was the same day as our Chicago show. We rushed home to be there, we attended the funeral, then went to our show. It was packed wall to wall and we dedicated our song “Keep Your Faith In Me” to him. The crowd was so loud singing every word. It broke me emotionally but I also felt so connected with everyone in the room. The power of music is so strong. I needed that.
If you could play at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?
Red Rocks. When music meets the absolutely beautiful landscape of Colorado how can you say anything else? lol

Last question! Just because we love spreading positivity and being sweet like honey, what’s one sweet thing you can say about your bandmates?
What I really admire about both of them is how they both have an insane determination to not only learn but craft a legitimate skill in whatever they are interested in. It doesn’t just stop at music. I mean with music Eric and Todor both stepped up to be backing vocalists, they are both playing piano, Eric (drummer) learned to become a better producer and set up our entire live rig, Todor (guitarist) has become a better songwriter and mixing engineer. Outside of music Eric has pushed himself to complete 2 marathons. Todor has become an expert in carpentry and has even learned to restore bikes. Whatever they set their mind to they can do. It’s inspirational for me! They are more than best friends to me, they are family.
We’d like to thank Ryan from Marina City for taking the time to chat with us! Be sure to get tickets to their upcoming shows. You don’t want to miss out!
