When we were kids, we loved watching Scooby Doo, now that we’re older… we still love Scooby Doo, but we also love other shows and movies that can bring a healthy dose of mystery into our lives. And we also developed a taste for crime stories as well, if we’re being honest, which is why we’re so excited to talk about this list of new shows that just dropped on Hulu and are all right up our alley.
Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer
Starting off strong, we have to recommend Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer, a true crime documentary that offers a new perspective on the work of Dr. Ann Burgess, the woman who changed the development of serial-killer profiling forever. Instead of looking solely at the criminals, Dr. Burgess also took the time to look at the victims with unwavering compassion. This taught her to think like the killers, understand why they did what they did and why they chose those victims.
All that work put the professor and psychiatric nurse at the center of some of the US’ most infamous true crime cases, such as Ted Bundy and Ed Kemper. And it’s crazy that we’d barely heard about her until now! But thankfully for those of us who enjoy true crime docs, we now get to see Dr. Burgess’ impact on profiling on our screens with the complete season of Mastermind on Hulu.
Hit-Monkey
Switching gears a little into fictional territory, we have Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s latest adult animation series. The main character, Monkey, is an intelligent snow monkey in search of revenge, who is mentored by the ghost of a former assassin named Bryce Fowler (yes, we know it sounds crazy, but we promise it works.)
The first season of the show was a success and everyone has been anxiously waiting to see what comes next for Monkey and Bryce in season two. And season two of Hit-Monkey is finally here, and it will be available for streaming on Hulu on Monday, July 15.
Sasha Reid And The Midnight Order
Back to the true crime docs, we have Sasha Reid And The Midnight Order. The series follows Dr. Sasha Reid and her Midnight Order, a secret group of young women from all walks of life, but with two things in common: an obsession with studying the dark and twisted psychology of criminals and the desire to protect those ignored by law enforcement.
Together, these women work outside of the system with the objective of protecting people, solving cold cases and diving into the minds of the criminals responsible, using their vast set of skills. And most of all, Sasha Reid And The Midnight Order live by their motto: “To have compassion first but let the evidence lead.” Can you tell we’re a little obsessed with this one?
HIP: High Intellectual Potential
Imagine being a totally ordinary adult in northern France, having two ex-husbands and three kids and working as a housekeeper only to one day be offered a job by the police. That’s what happened to Morgane Alvaro, the main character of HIP: High Intellectual Potential.
Morgane’s IQ of 160 has never really impacted her life until the day she is asked to become a consultant for the local police division that investigates serious crimes and highly intelligent criminals. And that would be a perfectly peaceful new job if Morgane didn’t have a problem with authority to go with her high IQ. Catch all three season of HIP on Hulu.
The Prison Confessions Of Gypsy Rose Blanchard
The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard has become well known even for people who aren’t into true crime because of just how big the story got. Especially recently since Gypsy’s release from prison. Now, in this six-hour special called The Prison Confessions Of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, we get to see even more of Gypsy’s story.
Her story as a victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy has been told many times by many people, but this is the first time Gypsy Rose herself has the chance to tell her truth in her own words. Catch The Prison Confessions on Hulu.
How I Caught My Killer
And to wrap up our list, we have the true crime docuseries How I Caught My Killer. The show highlights the real life stories behind crimes using many resources, such as interviews, archival material and cinematic recreations.
The common thread between all cases is that the victims all managed to leave case-breaking clues behind that eventually led to the solution of their crimes, such as text messages, diary entries and even social media posts that revealed a possible motive. But as interesting as this deep dive may be, let us also warn you that the topics discussed may be very sensitive, so beware if you do decide to watch How I Caught My Killer on Hulu starting July 18.
So, to all our crime and mystery fans out there, what did you think of our suggestions? Will you be watching any of them in the near future? Tell us all about it on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. We’d love to hear your thoughts!
