We fell in love with Philadelphia drag queen, Sapphira Cristál on season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. While we miss seeing her on our tv screens every week, Sapphira has been releasing new music with her new singles, ‘Enough’ and ‘Get Your Flowers.’ Not only that, but she’s currently on tour this summer. We recently got the privilege of chatting with Mother Sapphira, herself. We talk about her new music, The The Cristál Ball tour, and more. Let’s jump right in!
Hi and welcome to The Honey POP! We’re so excited to have you! As a fun introduction for our readers, what color palette would you assign to your music?
A deep midnight blue, a vibrant sunset orange, a soft lavender, a bold royal purple, butter yellow, and a sultry red. This album has something for everyone!
You kicked off Pride month eve with your single, ‘Enough’ which was a love letter to both yourself and Philadelphia. What’s the Philly drag scene like?
The Philadelphia drag scene is eclectic! It’s full of hilarious and talented queens who take the craft of drag very seriously. They’re constantly growing, changing, and inspiring me. It’s a very family-oriented scene, and we have a close-knit community full of genuine friends. You’ll often see us out together eating dinner in huge groups. It truly is the City of Sisterly Love!
You just did your first Soundcake show with Monét X Change. What was your first introduction to opera? Was it love at first listen?
When I was 3 or 4 years old, my parents took me to see La bohème at the Miller Outdoor Theatre with the Ebony Opera Guild. While all the other children were running around because they were bored, I was glued to my seat, entranced by the music. From then on, opera was a constant in my mind’s ear and in my heart.
You’re embarking on the Cristál Ball tour! What all goes into the production of a Sapphira Cristál show?
In this show, you’ll learn a lot about me. There’s comedy, impersonation, original music, dancing, superb lip sync, and opera—pretty much anything you could ask for (and some things you never imagined you’d see)! The Cristál Ball shows you why I’m not only the Crown Jewel of Philadelphia, but also the Crown Jewel of the World!
Is there a city you’re especially excited to perform in?
I’m really excited to perform in Houston, the town where I was raised. Chicago has been wonderful every time I’ve been there, so I’m excited to perform there again. And I’m definitely looking forward to my homecoming with two sold-out nights in Philadelphia!
What’s one of your favorite past show memories?
I have so many lovely memories of my own shows, but something different that sticks out in my memory are the three times I got to be a guest artist for Madonna’s Celebration Tour. Being on stage with such a huge star, meeting her family, and being invited back again and again gave me so much life and made me feel so loved. The roar of a crowd that huge is unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. It was amazing to see the possibilities that lie before me. That experience was an honor and a gift that I can never repay.
If you could play at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?
I want to sing with all the major orchestras of the world—it’s impossible to choose just one! And I’d love to bring Soundcake to all the major houses of the world as well. But it has always been a dream of mine to sing at the Metropolitan Opera and debut a work that was written for me! As much as I’d love to play Carmen, performing a work written specifically for my voice would be even better. That is the epitome of opera on my dream stage.
Your debut album is set to be released this summer! In three words, how would you describe it?
Funky, eclectic and loving!
Last question! We believe in the power of manifestation. If you could speak one thing into existence, what would it be?
For myself, it would be to be a world-renowned superstar—one of the biggest names in entertainment. For the world, it would be for everyone to love themselves so much that they share enough love with others to finally bring peace on Earth.
