It’s a very exciting day here in the hive! One of our long time faves, Origami Angel, has released not one but TWO!! brand new songs, ‘Dirty Mirror Selfie’ and ‘Where Blue Light Blooms,’ along with an accompanying double-feature video. The excitement doesn’t end there! The band has also announced their fourth album, Feeling Not Found, set to release on September 27th.
Anyone familiar with Gami knows they’re no stranger to genre bending. The band has their own unique sound, and that’s one of the many many reasons we love them. Both songs feel like something entirely new but also a familiar callback to several of their other tracks.
‘Dirty Mirror Selfie’
‘Dirty Mirror Selfie’ is the first of the new releases. This song is very hardcore influenced but still manages to uphold Gami’s signature power-pop sound. This is not the first time Origami Angel has experimented with hardcore sounds. In 2022, the band released a 3 song hardcore EP, DEPART, and we were obsessed. The five-minute release was not enough, so we are VERY excited they decided to bring this sound back.
The song details how it feels to be at war with your self image, and figuring out how to separate your true self from your inner demons. The title ‘Dirty Mirror Selfie’ is a play on the message describing how a negative self image is similar to looking at a ‘Dirty Mirror Selfie.’ Everything about this song is very clear, very clever, and most importantly, intentional.
Our Favorite Lyrics:
“There was something evil inside me pointing my anger at
Dirty bathroom mirrors and the person looking back
But it’s a matter of time before I’m conquering it
I’ll grab it in a chokehold, now I know I’m stronger than it
All this time I wasted struggling, fighting for things that I thought that I lacked
Now I’m taking that back”
‘Where Blue Light Blooms’
‘Where Blue Light Blooms’ is much different than its partner track. This song is much more poppy and serves as a perfect callback to Origami Angel’s debut album, Somewhere City. It’s fun and upbeat and very classic Gami.
Thematically, the song discusses feelings of spending too much time online and losing yourself on the internet. Living in an era where social media dominates most of our free time, this feeling isn’t foreign to any of us. Online spaces can be amazing places where we meet our best friends (and worst enemies). They give us room to be creative (or you wouldn’t be reading this right now), but also cause some of our greatest stressors. The message of ‘Where Blue Light Blooms’ is summed up perfectly in the line “My safe haven is oh, so close to hell.”
Our Favorite Lyrics:
“Buried under my bed sheets
Steeping in the wet concrete
Setting in around me I turn to stone
Half alive and half asleep
Trapped inside the past two weeks
Staring at the photons that teach me the rules and tell me what to do”
Despite being almost polar opposites, the two songs pair perfectly together. You can barely notice the transition between the two tracks when watching the video. Thematically they complement each other, while confidently standing alone. It’s a very flawless taste of what’s in store for the album, and we can barely contain our excitement for Feeling Not Found!
Although we’re a little disappointed by the lack of Pokemon references from this set of songs, this double release did not miss! Origami Angel reminded us that they will always be authentically Gami and exactly why we love them!
