We are deep into the weekend celebrating day two of Newport Folk Festival 2024. From jamming out with Killer Mike and Orville Peck to understanding the side effects of yoga by water, we are amped to be here. Our time was greeted with sunny skies and plenty of Del’s lemonade to help aid our thirst. What can we say? We are here for the vibes – here is what went down this Saturday.
Number One Babe

Rhode Island’s own, Number One Babe started day two strong. With a chill, effortless, and inviting set, they had the early crowd captivated from their first song. We got to hear some of their top songs like ‘We’re On The Phone (Again)’ and ‘Long Time’ which both have a twangy rock undertone to them. If you are into shoegaze and have Pinegrove or Beach House on your playlist, check these guys out. We promise you’ll love them.

Reyna Tropical

Reyna, Reyna, Reyna. What have you done to us? With a flirty and upbeat soul, Reyna Tropical had us swooning and kicking our feet. With an immediate response, their music got the crowd up and dancing. Their afro-Mexican beats were catchy yet lively and we didn’t want to leave. This year at Newport Folk there had been numerous Latin and Hispanic-infused acts – Reyna being one of them. And oh did we eat that up. Everything from their stage presence to their cheeky remarks, we know we are patiently waiting to see her live again.

Samm Henshaw

If you’ve slept on Samm Henshaw, it’s time to wake the f up. We aren’t playing around when we say you’re missing out on a soulful, depth-filled, intriguing artist. Hailing all the way from London, Samm and his band returned us back to folks’ roots – playing music that comes straight from the soul. Getting to hear ‘How Does It Feel?’, ‘Broke’, and some new tunes, we were pleasantly surprised just how quickly the crowd adopted him to the Newport family. Please, please, please go give him a listen right now.

Josiah and the Bonnevilles

We are so proud of Josiah and his growth throughout his still ever-growing musical career. From working long hours wishing his music would be heard to playing one of the big stages at an internationally known festival, he did the dang thing. Spreading his positivity and faith, we got to pray over his set with him and hear his music ring throughout the fort. There’s nothing we could say to stop us from crying happy tears but what a gem of a human he is. Good music comes from people who care deeply – and trust us his craft is delicate, deep, and relatable. We hope Josiah and his crew’s welcome to the fort was a good one.

Orville Peck

Woah settle down here, cowboy. We need a moment to breathe and process what just happened. Orville Peck took the Quad stage Saturday afternoon and oh boy did we fangirl. His brawny yet endearing presence held up as the crowd went crazy. We had an eye on the details of both his on-stage tux and his crew’s outfits. Dazzled yet rooted in southern-inspired embroidery, they all had their unique setup – it felt priceless to witness. We are so in love with Orville and his crew and he did not fail in exceeding our expectations.

The War on Drugs

The War on Drugs is a staple for any chill and relaxed festival. They instantly infused their laid-back and rugged sound that fit perfectly with watching the paddle boarders and boats pass by. We were excited to witness them jam out on stage and take on a new memory of what the Newport Folk Festival lineup can include.

Killer Mike

Now when we think of Folk music, we tend to gravitate toward music that’s more instrumental and singer-songwriter-infused. But Killer Mike did not hold back in changing our definitions for the better. The crowd grew and grew to see what was happening. He brought a piece of Atlanta rap to the fort making us all dance and bop our heads. It was an amazing experience getting to hear his DJ and live choir/backup vocalists who gave it their all.
