We know what you’re thinking… Conan O’Brien? At a folk fest? Trust us, this was the highlight of our Sunday. With great acts featuring Palmyra, Friko, Brittany Howard, De La Soul, and Conan O’Brien himself. We had a great time running around trying to take in all aspects of Newport Folk Festival – here’s what we caught and some artists you should be on the lookout for.
Palmyra

Coming from Virginia, this folk trio has started to make a path of their own. They opened up day three on the Harbor stage and the crowd absolutely loved them. We were drawn in by lead singer, Sasha Landon, and their fashion on stage and we absolutely cherished their handmade earrings and bright sparkly tights. Oh Boy Records also held an on-stage signing of the band and we felt so proud – their journey is just starting and we witnessed first-hand history in the making as they performed an amazing set.

La Lom

Bringing a little bit of LA to Newport, La Lom was an instant hit. Both peaceful and jaw-dropping, we got to watch them just jam out on stage and it was something for the books. La Lom had synchronicities between all three musicians that only a few can achieve properly. Yes, we have new music crushes, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dance in style. If you are into Cumbia or even Bolero music, we highly suggest you give them a listen.

Ocie Elliott

We got a moment during the day to meet up with Ocie Elliott. Performing earlier Saturday, they were enjoying the rest of the fest by jamming out and doing interviews. They joked that they were in “press mode” but that didn’t stop them from welcoming us into their schedule. From their set, they brought a quieter and inviting space to Newport and made us feel right at home. Such comforting souls we highly suggest you grab a seat, a drink, and put their music to soundtrack your life.

Cory Wong & Friends

In another jam-out session, we got to see Cory Wong and friends take the Quad stage inside the fort. We were surprised by the talent each member proud as they enjoyed each others company. Cory Wong will also be at Newport Jazz Festival but that didn’t stop him from creating his own unique narrative. Whether people were strolling by on a food break to parked in the front row, they had everyone intrigued.

Sierra Ferrell

Our Resident Royalty, Sierra Ferrell, took the big stage and was all around loved. Now, we know she loves a good on-stage costume moment, but when we saw her in a Beauty and the Beast-type dress, we were stunned. Sierra’s vocals are true to her and every song transported us back to a southern summer. We got to hear some of her songs like ‘Whispering Waltz’ and ‘In Dreams’ and it was an absolute dream.

De La Soul

Mixing it up, De La Soul, really brought out a different side of us. If you don’t know De La Soul, they are a band that has been kicking it since the 1980s and have done collabs with some notable groups throughout the years. We kept smiling since they had both the jokes and the charm that the crowd drew to. They were a perfect addition to the Newport Folk Fest Sunday lineup.

Friko

Chicago’s own, Friko, had a mid-day set that left us speechless. We are fans of music that makes you really think and gain a new perspective. Friko has been calling the shots in a tranquil manner for a few years now. As we welcomed them to the fort, we got the chance to photograph them and laugh together. Even though we didn’t get to spend long, we instantly connected on broken sunglasses and Del’s lemonade. If you are an indie kid at heart and love the nitty gritty feeling that music can hold, we think Friko is your next favorite artist.

Brittany Howard

She is an icon. She IS the moment. We got to fangirl over the one and only Brittany Howard as she crushed her set on the Fort Stage. Getting to hear ‘Stay High’ and ‘What Now’, Brittany has such a powerful yet comforting ease that flows out of her songs. We wish we had more time with her but that’s just it-She makes coming back for another show worth the wait.

Dropkick Murphys

If you’re an upper-east-coaster, you’ll know exactly who Dropkick Murphys are. If you don’t know them, now is the time to jump on the boat. Dropkick have the energy and upbeat nature that makes everyone (no matter your musical preference) get up and shout. Taking out the rows of chairs for their and De La Soul’s sets, we got to feel closer to a venue concert and almost forgot we were at a festival. Bringing on Violinist, Sara, from the Oh Hellos, they were never short of a good time.

Conan O’Brien

We were just as surprised as you to welcome Conan O’Brien to the fort this weekend. His charismatic nature and all around on-point jokes made the crowd stay until the very end. Bringing on guest features like Jack White and his band Dawes, there wasn’t a dull moment. What a way to commemorate another win for Newport Folk Festival and what a way to end our busy but endearing weekend.
