Love is truly in the air this summer! We at THP have been in the mood for a short and sweet YA romance. And Ravynn K. Stringfield’s debut novel, Love Requires Chocolate, does more than satisfy our craving!
Love Requires Chocolate by Ravynn K. Stringfield follows Whitney Curry, an enthusiastic theater nerd studying abroad in Paris for the fall semester. She’s researching for her senior thesis, for which she’s planning a one-woman show inspired by the life of renowned dancer and singer Josephine Baker. What she doesn’t plan is a budding romance with her grumpy French tutor Thierry Magnon.
We’ve had quite a few incredible adult romances this summer, so we wanted to venture to YA for today. Here’s a list of our favorite things about Love Requires Chocolate!

Book Overview: Love Requires Chocolate
Content Warning: mention of parent death
Summary: Whitney Curry is primed to have an epic semester abroad. She‘s created the perfect itinerary and many, many to-do lists after collecting every detail possible about Paris, France. Thus, she anticipates a grand adventure filled with vintage boutiques, her idol Josephine Baker‘s old stomping grounds, and endless plays sure to inspire the ones she writes and—ahem—directs!
But all is not as she imagined when she‘s dropped off at her prestigious new Parisian lycée. A fish out of water, Whitney struggles to juggle schoolwork, homesickness, and mastering the French language. Luckily, she lives for the drama. Literally.
Cue French tutor Thierry Magnon, a grumpy yet très handsome soccer star, who‘s determined to show Whitney the real Paris. Is this type-A theater nerd ready to see how lessons on the City of Lights can turn into lessons on love?
THP’s 3 Favorite Things About Love Requires Chocolate By Ravynn K. Stringfield
1. All The Lists
Our main character Whitney can never have too many lists. And we’re the same way! She has a bucket list of everything she wants to do in Paris. Though some of them are touristy activities, many of them are crucial to her research on Josephine Baker. In between going to classes and working on her show, Whitney’s determined to get through every item on her list. Not to mention the pros and cons list she makes about her handsome French tutor, Thierry.
2. Whitney And Thierry’s Adventures
This leads us to our second favorite thing about Love Requires Chocolate. Imagine having a handsome personal tour guide in your semester abroad in Paris. It’s no wonder Whitney picked up French more quickly than she expected. Thierry helps her plan field trips to visit the places on her to-do, and he even adds his own stops. He wants to show Whitney the Paris that not everyone gets to see. Honestly, we readers get to have just as much fun as she does.
3. The Romance
Is it really a story set in Paris if there isn’t any romance? Love Requires Chocolate builds Whitney and Thierry’s relationship so naturally. And we kept giggling whenever the two of them let down their guards and got even closer. One of our favorite scenes happened in the Chocolat Doré, since one of the items on Whitney’s top priorities list was “visit a chocolate shop.” They make chocolate for Thierry’s little sister Lucie, but they also get to know each other (and flirt) a lot more.
Bonus: It’s Not Over Yet
If you can’t get enough of this book, then you’re in luck! Love Requires Chocolate is the first book in Ravynn K. Stringfield’s Love in Translation series. And the next stop will be in Rajasthan, India, which will feature Whitney’s best friend Archi’s spring semester abroad. We already can’t wait for the next installment, where we hope to see cameos from Whitney and Thierry.
A new city. A one-woman show. And a handsome French tutor slash tour guide. Ravynn K. Stringfield’s debut novel, Love Requires Chocolate, delivers a playful and delightful romance that’ll satisfy your sweet tooth!
