Though the weather hasn’t cooled down enough yet, we at THP are kicking in our fall spirits with so many September releases! The ever-iconic Chloe Gong is back with the second book in her Flesh and False Gods trilogy, Vilest Things. And we had the honor of reviewing the book as well as interviewing the author herself. Check out our exclusive author interview with Chloe Gong ASAP!
But back to the topic of Vilest Things: we were thrilled to pick up on Calla Tuoleimi and Anton Makusa’s journey after the annual bloody games of San-Er. From enemies to lovers back to enemies again, these two must race to the borderlands of Talin to save their kingdom. How hard can it be? *nervous chuckle*
We’ve become so obsessed with book two, and we already can’t wait for the conclusion of this fantasy series. Here are three reasons to read Vilest Things by Chloe Gong!

Book Overview: Vilest Things
Content Warnings: death, violence, resurrection
Summary: Calla Tuoleimi has succeeded in the impossible. Despite the odds, she has won San-Er’s bloody games and eliminated King Kasa, her tyrant uncle and the former ruler of Talin. She now serves as royal advisor to Kasa’s adopted son, August Shenzhi, who has risen to the throne.
Only Calla knows it isn’t really August.
Anton Makusa is still furious about Calla’s betrayal in the final round of the games. In an impossible feat, he took over August’s body to survive and has no intention of giving up this newfound power. But when his first love, the beautiful, explosive Otta Avia, awakens from a yearslong coma and reveals a secret that threatens the monarchy’s authority over Talin, chaos erupts. As tensions come to a boiling point, Calla and Anton must set their conflicts aside and head to the kingdom’s far reaches to prevent anarchy…even if their empire might be better off burning.
Chloe Gong’s Incredible World Building
The annual games that took place in Immortal Longings opened a new world for us, one where people can jump bodies as long as their qi is stronger than the current owner’s. Vilest Things changes and expands on that world beautifully. Before book one, Calla refused to jump bodies for 15 years. The Weisannas were impossible to invade. And as far as anyone knew, the yaisu sickness had no cure. But now, everything is changing the more the world expands. This trilogy is truly on another level!
Interesting New Characters
After seven long years, the return of Anton’s childhood love, Otta Avia, makes for a messy love triangle in Vilest Things! Knowing Anton and Otta’s history, Calla often overthinks, gets jealous, and accuses Otta for scheming against the kingdom. Anton must also reconcile his past obsessive love and the extent he’ll go for Otta now. We also get introduced to another new character who claims to be the rightful ruler of San-Er. Her knowledge of body-jumping and Talin’s true history is bound to throw the world into chaos.
The Countless Plot Twists
Another reason to read Vilest Things is all the plot twists you’ll run into. We weren’t expecting Leida’s arc to play out the way it did. Calla starts hearing voices of a distant past that lead her to a certain altar. Otta’s true objective eludes us with each chapter. And if you thought the ending to book one was brutal, then wait until you get to the ending of Vilest Things! Calla and Anton did what they set out to do, but at what cost? August is back in his own body and on the hunt for Calla and Anton; there’s no telling what’ll happen next. We just know that we’re buckling in for the epic conclusion!
Chloe Gong’s Vilest Things expands on Talin and its world beautifully, and we’re hanging on to every new reveal and plot twist our main characters face!
Vilest Things by Chloe Gong is out September 10th, and you can order a copy of it here!
