Looking for your next adult romantasy? We’ve got just the thing. Cecy Robson’s new book, Bloodguard, is here, and we need to discuss it!
Set in the magical Kingdom of Arrow, Bloodguard by Cecy Robson follows a gladiator named Leith fighting for the freedom that comes with the title of Bloodguard. Then he meets Maeve, an elven princess who wants to sponsor him (and maybe also marry him once he becomes Bloodguard).
But everything is not what it seems in Arrow. Power-hungry generals and bloodthirsty creatures are on the hunt, and no one’s safe. Here are three reasons why you need to read Bloodguard by Cecy Robson!

Book Overview: Bloodguard
Content Warnings: death, violence, gore, blood, injury and dismemberment, illness, burning, drowning, poisoning, drugging, whipping, indentured servitude, classism, xenophobia, grief, and graphic language (Please read at your discretion!)
Summary: Everything in the Kingdom of Arrow is a lie.
Leith of Grey thought coming to this new land and volunteering to fight in the gladiator arena—vicious, bloodthirsty tournaments where only the strongest survive—would earn him enough gold to save his dying sister. He thought there was nothing left to lose.
He was wrong—and they took everything. His hope. His freedom. His very humanity.
All Leith has left is his battle-scarred body, fueled by rage and hardened from years of fighting for the right to live another day.
Then Leith meets Maeve, an elven royal who is everything he despises. Everything he should hate. Until the alluring princess offers him the one thing he needs most: a chance to win the coveted title of Bloodguard—and his freedom.
But in a kingdom built on secrets and lies, hope doesn’t come cheap.
Nor will his ultimate revenge…
There Are Two POVs
An adult romantasy with dual points of view? Sounds just like the kind of book we’d love. And we absolutely ate up Bloodguard! Even with an almost instant attraction, Leith and Maeve have a rocky and distrustful start to their relationship. But then the two of them realize how much they can benefit from sticking together. Maeve can heal Leith after his arena battles, and Leith’s success means Maeve can avoid marrying the vengeful and villainous Soro. We love getting to read both sides of this romance!
The Male Lead
It’s been a long while since we’ve read about a man written by a woman. Especially one in a fantasy like Cecy Robson’s Bloodguard. Leith of Gray has spent three years as a gladiator, sending his earnings back to his hometown for his mother and little sisters. Even after years of fighting and surviving such horrible living conditions, he remains kindhearted. He’s strong and tenacious, proving himself again and again with every impossible battle he faces. Leith is someone you can’t help but root for, and we’re Team Leith till the end!
It’s A Solid Series Starter
In case you missed it, Bloodguard is only book one of Cecy Robson’s Old Erth fantasy series. The worldbuilding of Arrow and its surrounding foreign lands felt incredibly thorough. We can already see where our adventures can go next, should Leith and Maeve be required to travel outside of their kingdom. And the way the ending wraps up was super satisfying. We’re beyond excited to see how Leith and Maeve’s actions in the epilogue will play out in book two!
With epic gladiator battles and main characters you can’t help but cheer for, Cecy Robson’s Bloodguard has us completely hooked, and we’re already not-so-patiently waiting for the sequel!
Bloodguard by Cecy Robson comes out October 22nd, and you can preorder a copy of it here!
