We’re taking a break from the chills and thrills and opting for an angsty sports romance today! To put it simply, Beautiful Broken Love by Shanora Williams took our breath away. (Along with a bunch of our tears, but we just couldn’t resist!)
Beautiful Broken Love follows the story of Davina Klein, the CEO of a skincare company and a woman who lost her husband seven months ago, and Deke Bishop, a star NBA player and a man whose older brother died by suicide when he was 13. These two meet when Davina tries to secure an endorsement for her products with Deke.
But when a connection sparks and their feelings start to grow stronger, can Davina face her grief and fears enough to let Deke into her heart? We absolutely loved reading Beautiful Broken Love, and here are three reasons why!

Summary: It’s been months since her dreams of forever were brutally shattered. Seven long months since her husband and soulmate, Lew, died in her arms, leaving her to carry on. Alone. And Davina Klein-Roberts still isn’t sure how to move forward.
To escape her anguish, Davina throws everything into work, pushing Golden Oil Co., her self-built skin care line, to become a viral success. Now she’s poised to clinch a major endorsement deal too. But it’s bittersweet without Lew by her side.
A meeting with Deke Bishop, the hot NBA star she’s courting for her brand, leaves Davina flustered. With his dimpled smile and warm handshake, Deke’s a natural pitchman. And he’s clearly interested―not only in her lotions.
Davina soon discovers that Deke’s more than just another player and carries his own pain. But as her feelings for him grow, so does her guilt. Will the pain of a future already lost keep her from embracing hope for a new one?
Davina’s Emotional Journey
At its core, Beautiful Broken Love is about Davina’s journey grieving the loss of her husband Lew and finding a way to accept his death. In the seven months since Lew passed, she’s been pouring herself into her work as a way to distract herself from feeling her emotions fully. So when Deke comes into the picture and works his way into her thoughts and heart, Davina feels guilty for moving on too soon or falling too quickly. It isn’t until Davina resolves some repressed issues with her mom that she starts to heal and realize she’s the only one getting in the way of her happiness.
All Of Deke Bishop
If we had a list of fictional men we fell in love with in record timing, Deke Bishop in Beautiful Broken Love would be at the top. He’s a love interest that oozes charm. His personality and humor whenever he flirted with Davina made us giggle and feel some type of way every single time. And Deke’s the perfect example of “if he wanted to, he would.” A professional basketball player has little room in his schedule for a committed relationship, but he would drop everything and drive across states just to make sure Davina was alright. His patience and compassion for Davina is unmatched, especially considering his own trauma and loss.
Their Siblings
We always appreciate when sibling relationships are so relatable like the ones in Beautiful Broken Love. Between Deke’s older sisters, Camille and Whitney, and Davina’s younger sister Octavia and baby brother Abe, we can’t pick our favorite sibling. The way they joke around, communicate, and support one another cracks us up and warms our hearts. We especially love when Deke’s sisters treat Davina like their own sister and even better than Deke sometimes. Or when Deke surprises Abe (who’s also a huge fan) with such thoughtful gifts near the end of the book. Family shows up no matter what.
Shanora Williams’ new novel Beautiful Broken Love pulls on our heartstrings with everything it has. A powerful depiction of love after loss and a moving ode to the importance of family, it’s truly a delight to read.
