Every release by Chuu is so good that she constantly has us begging for new music. Our prayers were answered because we have a new addition to her incredible solo discography: Only cry in the rain. Despite it being 10 months since the release of Strawberry Rush, Chuu has been booked and busy, with variety shows, a tour, and so much more. Chuu has always been everywhere, and now she’s back again everywhere in our playlist, with her most interesting, most vulnerable, and best release to date.
The Title Track
Chuu is known for her bubbly, bright aura, which has translated onto her music, creating a discography full of happiness and comfort. ‘Only cry in the rain’ is her first title track to touch on sadder emotions, and yet she does it in a way that emanates Chuu‘s energy. Despite its gloomy undertone, ‘Only cry in the rain’ is vibey, upbeat, and catchy, creating a somewhat bittersweet atmosphere. This song is about letting the pain go after falling out with someone you care about, but it’s also about how pain isn’t overwhelming or all-consuming – it just hits sometimes, and that’s okay to let emotions go. ‘Only cry in the rain’ is full of hope and feels like a hug, like a ray of sun shining through a clouded sky, and it’s probably Chuu’s best title track to date.
The B-Sides
Starting with the pain of ‘Only cry in the rain,’ Chuu creates a storyline with her b-sides and right away leads us to ‘Back in town.’ While ‘Only cry in the rain’ is the sad side of the coin of missing someone, ‘Back in town’ is a groovy track about looking forward to finding someone left behind. It’s a carefree track full of confidence and personality. ‘Kiss a kitty’ is getting a lot of attention, and… Yeah, we get it. Aside from the obvious undertones and double meanings of the lyrics, ‘Kiss a kitty’ is the brightest, most fun, unserious point of the mini-album. It’s catchy, it’s witty, a serotonin booster, and will definitely be on our pride playlist for this year.
‘Je t’aime’ is a gem, not only in Only cry in the rain but also in Chuu’s entire discography. ‘Je t’aime’ is one of the songs that feels pretty. It has fall vibes and similar energy to Chuu’s first mini-album, Howl. The title says it all: it’s a gorgeous love song that makes love seem so simple. Listening to this song makes it feel like everything gets better. ‘No More’ is such a high point in the mini-album and the perfect closure. ‘No More’ shows the journey from sadness to owning oneself with its empowering lyrics and comforting energy. With an infectious bass and addictive melodies, ‘No More’ feels like the sky clearing from clouds and from the rain. Chuu’s vocals make the song reach levels of emotion and comfort you don’t find very often.
Only cry in the rain marks Chuu‘s first comeback in 10 months, but also her best comeback to date. With her best title track yet and even more unforgettable b-sides, Only cry in the rain is everything to represent Chuu’s grayer sides, where she explores happiness but also sadness. Only cry in the rain marks Chuu’s never-ending evolution, and it’s already one of the best releases in 2025.
