The brother-sister musical duo has been dropping new singles here and there over the past few months, prepping us for a bigger release coming soon. Ahead of a new single, ‘1234567,’ we sat down with Savannah and Brandon Hudson of BETWEEN FRIENDS to chat about all things Gen Z, writing and collaborating as siblings, and their best thrift finds.

Welcome to The Honey POP! A lot of us here in the hive are big BETWEEN FRIENDS fans, so we are so excited to be chatting with you today. To start us off, share with us three adjectives you’d use to describe your music to someone who has never heard it before.

Take us back to the beginning of BETWEEN FRIENDS. When did you both realize that there was something special brewing between the two of you musically as a brother-sister duo?
There was a pretty immediate gravitation pull towards making sounds, it started really young. We’d write songs while watching movies and pretend they were on the soundtrack. Although we are siblings working together, we’ve never really thought twice about that being part of the conversation. It is just what it is; it’s what we do and have always done. There’s this mutual vision, goal destination, and sound that’s shouting at us in our heads.
You two know each other better than anyone else. What are some challenges that come with making music together as siblings?
Mainly time management. We get so deep in every part of this world that we are making, it’s hard to clock out. Sometimes we forget that we need to tap into real life, be friends outside of the workshop, and catch up on anything else aside from the work that we are making. It’s honestly like the Matrix.

Your new single is finally here! Tell us a bit about what this new track means to you and what you hope fans take away from it.
See question 3 <3 . ‘1234567’ is realizing that there are no days off and romanticizing a 9 to 5.
Your song ‘DJ’ got us thinking about which BETWEEN FRIENDS songs would make the ideal DJ set. What’s one song of yours that you think every DJ should have on their playlists?
It’s on the new record actually, you’ll ID it immediately once you listen.
In what ways does making music for Gen Z inform your music-making process?
Because we are both also Gen Z, there is this sort of mutual internet understanding. We are all following the same machines, hearing the same snippets, tapped into similar sources on a daily basis. Due to that through-line, there is this super mutual understanding of what we are doing, how it’s perceived, and what it actually means. There’s a depth level that only our peers in age really grasp. Even describing archiving IG posts to promote a new album campaign to older generations is such a difficult conversation.
Your last album, I Love My Girl, She’s My Boy, featured Teezo Touchdown. What’s one memorable moment or important thing you’ve learned in the process of collaborating with other musical artists?
Collaboration used to really freak us out; we were afraid that any other output would disrupt our sort of “sacred,” isolated creative process. When we made I Love My Girl, we really let others in for the first time, and that kind of changed our whole perspective. Now we’ve curated a group of several truly special opinions, voices, and creators apart of this new project with us.
Your amazing sense of style adds another layer of artistry to your music. What’s one of your best thrift finds?
Neon pink studded Louboutins and an original test print Daft Punk tee shirt.
