As we sift through upcoming book releases and reviews, we always try to make time for at least one romantic fantasy novel! Luckily for us, there isn’t a shortage of romantasies out there. Sometimes, we’ll even come across a gem like I. V. Marie’s debut novel, Immortal Consequences.
Immortal Consequences is the first book in the Souls of Blackwood Academy duology. It takes place in a world where Purgatory becomes a school. Every 10 years, the Academy’s top students compete in the Decennial, testing their magic for a chance to join an elite group of victors or pass on to the Other Side.
We were completely enthralled reading I. V. Marie’s new romantasy, and we think you will, too. Here are three reasons you should read Immortal Consequences!

The Blackwood Academy Lore
We absolutely love the concept behind Blackwood Academy in Immortal Consequences! For centuries, those who die as teenagers with in-between souls and morals can be admitted into Blackwood. To keep the balance within Blackwood, however, there must be a consistent flow of souls entering and leaving to the Ether. But recently, this balance has been disrupted, for reasons our six main characters will find out as they compete in the Decennial.
The Angst Never Ends
Immortal Consequences is a romantic fantasy, with two angst-filled core romances driving the plot. Wren and August have a strong, push-pull romance with forced proximity that runs so much deeper than we could’ve expected. August’s secrets build almost to the point of no return. Meanwhile, Emilio and Olivier have such a deep mutual pining romance; neither one able to confess their feelings for the other. Olivier’s secrets eventually come to light, but not before something threatens to separate the two of them for good.
Setup For The Sequel
The nerve-wracking ending of Immortal Consequences had us scared to turn the page. Considering the six main characters’ positions at the end of the book, we’re looking forward to see what will happen in the sequel. Though this Decennial officially has a winner, the Ether is not yet fully satisfied with the results. All but one character is now unaccounted for by the school, their fates to be determined. We’re especially invested in Wren’s newfound identity and her connection to the Demien Order. That’s all we’ll choose to divulge for now…
From the concept of Blackwood Academy to the never-ending angst, Immortal Consequences by I. V. Marie is a brilliant debut. We’re fully invested in this new romantasy series.
