We have to be honest here: we listen to this record in its entirety at least once a month, and we are truly still hanging onto every word Troye sang ten years ago. This album shaped so many moments during our formative years; we have endless memories of crying, dancing, and singing along to every song. We can hardly believe we’ve lived with this record for ten years, and we are still finding new things to love about it with each listen!
To celebrate the tenth anniversary, we are breaking down the five tracks that we revisit the most! Let’s jump in!
Listen to Blue Neighbourhood here!
‘EASE’
When we were first crafting this list, ‘EASE’ was the easiest choice. This song has brought us so much comfort over the years and, truthfully, has made us feel less alone. When the lyrics are laid out in front of you, you really see what a heavy song this is lyrically, and how the backing track adds to that yearning for a better life, for a simpler life.
‘SUBURBIA’
‘SUBURBIA’ is a love letter of sorts to growing up on the outskirts. The community of it, the nostalgia of it when you’re away. Nostalgia is a powerful tool, and it’s almost impossible, when listening to this song, not to think of a place in your life that invokes these emotions for you.
‘YOUTH’
‘YOUTH’ was the song of the year when it came out. Everywhere we went, the mall, parties, to our own playlists, you couldn’t escape how much everyone was obsessed with this song, and for good reason. Ten years later, and we can confirm this song is just as good as it’s ever been. We need to be transported back to hearing this live for the first time, truly life-changing.
‘HEAVEN’
‘HEAVEN’ is one of those once-in-a-lifetime songs that really moves anyone who listens to it. Troye deals with quite a heavy topic in this track, religion, and the damnation that often follows if you don’t fit the mold. We remember feeling like we could exhale for the first time, feeling fully understood after listening to this song for the first time, and how necessary that was for us as young people. The line “Maybe I Don’t Want Heaven” still gives us goosebumps.
‘COOL’
After listening to Blue Neighbourhood all the way through in preparation for writing this list, ‘COOL’ was the obvious choice to close out the five tracks. We can’t count how many times over the ten years since release we have turned back to this track. There will probably never be a song as good to roll the windows down and drive around a city at night blasting.
