EVERGLOW have gone through ups and downs over the past few years, but their passion and love for the group have never changed. And we’ve stayed here waiting as long as it was necessary to get our girls back. The wait is finally over: EVERGLOW is back, this time as a four-member group: E:U, Sihyeon, Onda and Aisha. Their first mini-album in three years, CODE, is not only here to prove EVERGLOW is unbeatable, but also to show how they’re one of the pillars that what made K-Pop’s 4th gen what it is today.
The Title Track
EVERGLOW has some of the most iconic title tracks of the 4th gen in their discography, including ‘Bon Bon Chocolat,’ ‘Adios,’ and, of course, ‘LA DI DA.’ With every comeback, they’ve managed to come up with something new, unique, and era-defining that expanded on their sound. Yet, every time, it had that indescribable addictive sound we can find in every EVERGLOW release. And that’s exactly what we got with ‘CODE:’ it’s new, bold, and infectious. This new title track is dark and futuristic with its electronic and techno elements. Without even meaning to, ‘CODE’ will get stuck in your head. The fun and unpredictable twists and turns make ‘CODE’ such an impressive and bold comeback after two years without music. EVERGLOW are defining what a comeback truly is.
The B-Sides
CODE as a comeback is made even better by three incredible B-sides, so unique to each other yet that create a cohesive sound and an incredible mini-album. They all expand on EVERGLOW’s sound while giving us that intense, addictive signature EVERGLOW sound we’ve missed so much. ‘BREAKOUT’ is the prime example of this. It’s something new for EVERGLOW, but it works incredibly well for the group. It’s an unapologetically bold track that serves as the perfect introduction to this new world, with its harsh production and intense vocals. The EDM production hits so hard, and it sets the perfect mood for such an impactful mini-album.
The star of the show, however, is ‘FOCUS’—a B-side that easily could be a title track. It has all the elements we love about EVERGLOW’s sound put into one song. The hyper-pop song is powerful, confident, and truly badass with its dark aura. The pre-choruses of ‘FOCUS’ are probably the best moment in CODE as a whole, and no other song exemplifies better why EVERGLOW’s sound was a pillar of the 4th gen. ‘Can’t Be Broken’ brings something completely new to EVERGLOW’s discography and a very refreshing sound to CODE. The song is vocal-based with its pop-rock adjacent sound and bright energy. With writing credits from all four members, the song is hopeful and tells the story of their unshakable resilience and the group’s strength despite all the hardships. ‘Can’t Be Broken’ shows that EVERGLOW are truly not going anywhere any time soon.
