Since kenzie dropped biting my tongue last year, it’s all we can listen to. Each song gets more and more relatable as time goes on. Even so, we could always use more kenzie songs in our lives. Kenzie’s latest EP, notes from the in between, is finally here, and we have thoughts. Here’s a breakdown of each of the new songs on notes from the in between, and our favorite tracks:
“i wrote this ep during a period of breakups, not just romantic ones, but friendships too. it was a time where everything i thought was stable started shifting. i was 21, and suddenly i felt the weight of adulthood in a way i hadn’t before. there’s this moment when you realize you can’t go back to being a kid, but you also don’t feel ready to be fully grown. that tension is what runs through every song.

‘kleptomaniac’
Ouch, our hearts. ‘kleptomaniac’ opens kenzie’s new EP with a punch to the gut, but out of the five songs on the tracklist, this one feels the most fitting to guide us into this new era of music. Right out the gate, we hear a more mature version of kenzie that she left us with on biting my tongue (and boy, do we love this version of her). If you’ve recently gone through a hard breakup, ‘kleptomanic’ is now your new favorite song. Don’t thank us, thank kenzie!
‘sophie’
A standout track from the EP, ‘sophie’ is a love song about friendship. Oftentimes, we feel platonic relationships on a deeper level than romantic ones. Your best friend just gets you in a way that no one else can, and it’s clear that kenzie can relate to these themes on this track. ‘sophie’ reminds us of Clairo’s music in all the best possible ways—kenzie & Clairo collab, when?
‘mutual destruction’
The single from notes from the in the between, ‘mutual destruction’ is the guiding light of the EP. It lives in the middle of the EP and has one of the most catchy hooks. Not to mention, kenzie’s vocals sound mature and show clear growth here. We love the visual direction kenzie took here—incorporating the gentle yet strong nature of waves—which are the two dynamics we hear clearly in this EP.
‘time machine’
Yearning for childhood is a feeling we all know well. Dressing up as a princess and staring up at the stars on your trampoline in the backyard of your childhood home is a moment we wish we could go back to, and so does kenzie. Growing up is special, but comes with many moments of heavy weights. Kenzie’s strength clearly seems to be writing about her childhood nostalgia—we’re totally here for more like ‘time machine!’
‘time machine’ is about missing childhood and wishing life felt simpler, even though i know i wouldn’t trade my experiences. ‘kleptomaniac’ and ‘mutual destruction’ live in moral grey areas—attraction, self-sabotage, wanting something you know you shouldn’t. ‘where do we go’ asks the question i think about constantly: what happens after we die, and does love still matter if we don’t end up together in the end?

‘where do we go’
The perfect ending to this EP. After four songs that had us crying into our pillows, ‘where do we go’ ties all the messy strings together in one beautiful song. It also feels like a clear extension of ‘time machine,’ which extends the themes of growing up and feeling lost on the path of life. We’ve all felt these intimidating feelings, right? It’s like kenzie just knows how to write down everything we feel in one perfect melody!
i don’t have answers. this ep isn’t about conclusions—it’s about honesty. it’s about allowing yourself to be in between phases without rushing to define them. if there’s one thing i hope people feel when they listen, it’s that they’re not alone in that uncertainty.
