Summary: As a scholarship student at the magical Lyceum, Naomi would rather focus on deciphering ancient scrolls than dating. Especially since the only boys asking her out are less interested in a night in Naomi’s company than an introduction to her influential aunt.
So Naomi devises an excuse to turn down her persistent suitors: She claims to be betrothed to a demon.
Her story works perfectly. Until she arrives home one night and finds the demon Daziel lounging in her rooms, insisting he’s her betrothed. Naomi knows he’s lying—after all, the betrothal was never real—but the gorgeous and infuriating demon is surprisingly resistant to her banishing spells. And with his penchant for baking and home décor, it’s not so bad having him around.
Besides, she has other worries—like the ancient scroll she’s trying to translate, and the way the city’s magic has become suddenly unstable. But the more Naomi learns about the scroll, and the more she gets to know Daziel, the more it seems like she might be at the center of something bigger than she could have imagined.
An Adorable Animal Companion
One of our favorite characters in A Practical Guide to Dating a Demon was Paz! Daziel’s little red salamander companion, who quickly warms up to Naomi and stole our hearts! We loved how he provided comfort during tense moments, curling up in Naomi’s pocket or snuggling into Daziel’s neck. Paz and his antics reminded us of Pascal from Tangled! A cute friend and companion who provided comedic relief, we’d love to hang out with Paz!
A Slow Burn Romance Filled With Tension
If you like slow-burning romances that start with a small spark and gradually simmer into a flame. You’ll love the tension between Naomi and Daziel! Throughout A Practical Guide to Dating a Demon, the two main characters get to know one another through simple everyday life. What starts as a rocky situation with Daziel determined to stay with a confused Naomi, gradually grows more loving and closer as they pretend to be betrothed. From so many cute moments, like Daziel learning to bake pastries for Naomi to Naomi attending Daziel’s sports matches, they felt like a real, adorable couple. Not only did they support one another in achieving their dreams, but they were also relatable in how they worked through disagreements. They were so cute!
A Whimsical And Detailed Setting
Set in a world where magic from three mythical beasts controls the weather and everyone’s way of life, A Practical Guide to Dating a Demon had such a magical atmosphere. With a complex history and Naomi’s research dedicated to deciphering an ancient dead language, we could easily picture ourselves working alongside Naomi and her classmates. One of our favorite settings was the magical school that Naomi attended as a language student. We wish we had gotten to see more of it! The folklore around demons was also intriguing, with whimsical details from songs and traditions meant to ward them off.
Hannah Reynolds’ A Practical Guide to Dating a Demon skillfully combines a magical school, mythical beasts, and a couple working to save a world on the brink of collapse into a cozy and heartwarming package!
