Here’s the thing about getting attached to a Lynette Noni book: you already know, going in, that she’s going to do something to you. You brace for it. You think you’re ready. And then you get to a certain page and realize, once again, you were not ready. SHADOW REAPER, the first in a planned duology, is exactly that kind of experience.
If you came up through BookTok during The Prison Healer era, you know the Noni special: a fierce heroine, a slow simmer of a romance, and a plot that keeps pulling the rug just when you’ve found your footing. This one delivers on all of it, and then some! So grab your TBR list, because we’re about to make a strong case for bumping this one to the top (no spoilers, of course).
A City Built On Dread (And It Works)
Set on Elverdine Isle, the story drops us into Aravell, a city kept alive by magic and haunted by a deadly blackmist that kills everything it touches. Add reapers, people addicted to siphoning magic, who prey mostly on children because kids carry more of it, and you’ve got a world that feels genuinely dangerous from page one. It’s dark. Like, properly dark. What we loved is that the worldbuilding never turns into a homework assignment. Noni feeds you the rules of her magic system as you go, so you’re never stuck slogging through ten pages of lore before anything happens.
Viridia Solace Is The FMC We Root For
At the center is seventeen-year-old Viri, a reaper hunter who has spent years training to take down the Reaper Priest, the man who murdered her parents. Grief is her engine. Everything she does runs on it. And that’s what makes her so easy to root for, because her fury never feels like an aesthetic. It feels earned.
Enter Reeve Ashton, Professional Problem
You knew there’d be a guy. There’s always a guy. When the Reaper Priest’s most loyal follower, Reeve Ashton, gets captured, he offers Viri a deal: help him, and she gets her shot at the man who took everything from her. Bargaining with a reaper? Terrible idea. Bargaining with this reaper? Even worse. She does it anyway. What follows is the enemies-to-lovers slow burn the trope was invented for, all banter and mistrust and that delicious will-they-won’t-they tension where you’re pretty sure they want to throttle each other as much as anything else.
The Found Family Will Get You
Here’s what we didn’t fully see coming: the warmth. For a book this grim, the crew of magic thieves Viri ends up tangled with brings real tenderness to the story. Found family is one of those tropes that can feel like a checkbox, but when it’s done right, it’s the thing that lingers.
Those Twists, Though
We won’t spoil a single thing. We wouldn’t dare. But we will say that Noni has built her reputation on plot twists that make you want to immediately flip back and reread for the breadcrumbs you missed, and SHADOW REAPER is no exception.
So, Should You Read It?
If you’re a fan of Kristen Ciccarelli, Sabaa Tahir, or Sarah J. Maas, this slots right onto your shelf. It’s dark, fast, emotionally heavy in the best way, and it ends on the kind of note that makes the wait for book two feel genuinely unfair. Consider it firmly added to your summer reading lineup!
