Day Two is in the books! Today’s Newport Folk festival lineup was all about the up-and-comers and the passionate people that have come all across the world to join in festivities that Fort Adams brings. And guess what? We have some gems for you to add to your summer playlist because of it. Getting to witness everyone from Medium Build to Devin Gilfillian and friends all the way to Vulfpeck, we were busy securing you the best recap.
Our Favorite Moment Of The Day!

One of the best moments during the day was getting to see Community Chapstick take Foundation stage right off the Fort stage. People lined up for an hour to catch their set! Getting everyone with different music tastes to come in and genuinely want the best for this newcomer band was worth every minute. Young and old, this was highkey why we recap Newport Folk Festival since you never know how community shows up in different ways during the weekend.
The Ollam

The start of the day was The Ollam, which is a collaborative group/international band that spans the U.S., Ireland, and Scotland. We were up to being surprised since we have never heard of them before and Newport did not steer us wrong! Bringing in instrumentals and leaving out singing (for most of their set) was a vibe that was needed early on during the day. We knew it was going to be HOT and SUNNY at Newport Folk Festival so we opted for a jam sesh right from the gates.

This Is Lorelei

One of our favorite genres of music to see live is Indie. This genre has so much to offer when on stage and can let the artists really play around with not only their lyrics but also their stage presence. This is Lorelei had brought the vibes as they blessed Quad stage and it was refreshing to see their individual on stage styles represent who they were as well. We got to jam out and they were our soundtrack on the way home because we couldn’t get enough of them.

Sea to Shining Sea with Devin Gilfillian

This set was immensely different then rest! We got to see different special guests and the songs that they felt represented being American. Devin Gilfillian is a Newport star and had traveled across the country asking different artists and musicians what is the secret sauce within music to not only being human but also being American. He went to homes, dive bars, clubs, and venues to track down the core of this idea (and landing lastly at Newport Folk Festival’s grounds). Making Newport the final stop on this tour, Devin and his guests sang with Nina Simone and a few others that helped shaped musical freedom and choice. This was a highlight for us to watch as Devin was magnetic with each guest.

Medium Build

What can we say? We LOVE Medium Build with all our hearts! From the moment he stepped on stage with his cheetah print heeled boots, we knew that this set would be on our minds for long time. Having a little rasp to his take on Indie Rock his music has a little edge to it that makes you think. Also he had on his industrial earplugs which is a cause for a fashion celebration if we might add. You’ll never want to miss a Medium build set/concert once you know of him. He’s genuinely one of the coolest songwriters that we have seen a minute!

Lizzy McAlpine

It seems like yesterday that we were in the thick of the pandemic jamming out with Lizzy Alpine on Instagram Live when she was writing songs at Berkeley. Now, fast forward six years, Lizzy took the biggest stage and it was everything. Debuting her newest song ‘The Light In The Painting’ was a highlight that was intimate, yet so profound. If you haven’t hear about Lizzy and have a theatre streak within you, you’ll love her soft and gentle approach to indie pop. She brought out Tiny Habits for a few songs and we were just in awe about how her career has blossomed into something so cool!

Medicine Singers

When we got the notification of a pop up set on the Bike stage, we ran over to see who it was! This set was something that had gotten us to really be in the moment and see a piece of culture come to life. From interacting with people in the crowd to doing one of their tribe’s oldest dances, their voices and drumming skills were unmatched. Medicine Singers were so talented and at peace and it translated well from those who got to catch their set at Newport Folk Festival.

Community Chapstick

This band? Everything. Their garage and rock sound brought something that was unmatched during day two. Jamming out in the crowd and interacting with the sound crew, they really knew how to put on a show. Also the heart shaped guitar was the perfect touch. As this band grows, we are so excited to see how their sound solidifies and makes a mark.

Leif Vollebekk

Now we love getting serenaded by talented and kind people. Leif Vollebekk is everyone’s favorite autumnal artist that makes us really stop and listen. From his guest appearances throughout the day to his intimate set, his passionate playing solidified his excellent song writing and performance live. Leif had felt like a giant hug to us just by the way he was candid in letting us into why his instruments weren’t working how they should be. He leaned into it and brought us all along the ride. It was clear that his mastery in his work held steady even if things have to change last minute.

Vulfpeck

What a way to end day two at Newport Folk Festival!! Vulfpeck was our last band we got to witness of the day and it was the best decision. From their acting to their playfulness on stage, Vulfpeck always brings the energy. The crowd had been so receptive to their euphoria dancing and singing out loud. We got to see not only young kids but also people of every age dance in merriment. Lighthearted was the best way to describe this set. The sun was setting and heat wave had passed and on stage was this vibe–what more can we say? 10/10 no notes.
