August has had an explosive start with new book releases. Now, we’ve been waiting about a year for this one! Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s new book, Adversary to the Villain, just came out. And we’re ready to dive into the latest installment of the Assistant to the Villain series.
Following the many truth bombs at the end of Accomplice to the Villain, Adversary to the Villain picks up right after book three. Evie learns to manage her new powers while also trying to figure out her role in the prophecy threatening Rennedawn.
With new developments and more cruel twists, the latest book in Hannah Nicole Maehrer‘s romantasy series has us obsessed. Here’s why we loved reading Adversary to the Villain!

Book Overview: Adversary To The Villain
Content warnings: blood, death, battle, serious injury, torture, animal death, near-drowning, sexual situations, parental betrayal and abandonment, graphic language, environmental deterioration, torture, harassment, discussions of being boiled alive and eaten, alcohol consumption and weapons (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: Evie has always tried to be helpful, loyal, and only mildly involved in treason. But with a dangerous prophecy threatening the very magic of Rennedawn—not to mention the race to claim its necessary artifacts before King Benedict does—things are starting to feel…less like a career path and more like a serious problem.
The prophecy won’t stop pointing in Evie’s direction. The Villain’s magic keeps choosing her. And honestly, if you’re going to be accused of evil anyway, you might as well commit.
Unfortunately, the more Evie leans into her alleged villain era, the more her boss starts acting like the hero of a completely different story. Trystan is getting closer—closer than is wise, advisable, or even remotely professional—and looking at her like she’s already chosen a side. His.
Which is deeply inconvenient, because if Evie can’t save the kingdom’s magic, she might just become its greatest threat.
Couple-y Things
Not only do Evie and Trystan face a dangerous prophecy, but they also face their romantic feelings and budding relationship. After the events of book three, Adversary to the Villain shows the pair openly (finally) in love with each other. To some of the characters, it’s sickening. But to us, it’s sweet. Trystan doesn’t try to hide his blatant flirting with Evie, and she doesn’t stop teasing him. Evie continues making reckless decisions, while Trystan supports her every step of the way. The slow burn has paid off, your Honor.
Chaotic Found Family
Another thing we love about Adversary to the Villain is the large cast of characters banding together to save Rennedawn. The found family is messy and full of chaos, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. From Evie and Trystan’s siblings to their close friends Tatianna, Becky, Blade, Kingsley, and more, we loved hearing slices of the story from everyone’s varying perspectives. And yet, a few twists toward the end of book four still managed to surprise us. We didn’t realize how much the dots connected between books until this one.
Big Decisions
Finally, Adversary to the Villain forces our main characters to decide how they want to fulfill the prophecy. They choose whether to let fate decide or do what destiny writes for them. The kingdom rests on their shoulders. (No pressure…) We hate to say it, but King Benedict holds more of an upper hand than we’d like. Evie and Trystan get backed up until the only thing they can do is for the good of everyone else. The so-called Villain and his adversary turn out to be some of the good ones, after all.
From sickeningly sweet couple antics to messy, chaotic found family shenanigans, the villainy doesn’t stop with Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Adversary to the Villain!
