We’re kicking off August with one of our most-anticipated books of the year: Chloe Gong‘s Eyes of Kings! It is the epic conclusion to her Flesh and False Gods trilogy, picking up right after Vilest Things.
After a tumultuous ending in book two, the kingdom of Talin is on the cusp of war. Calla Tuoleimi and Anton Makusa faces August Shenzhi and Otto Avia, each wanting the divine crown for themselves. And yet, everything changes as whispers of old gods begin to surface among the provinces.
If you’re in the same boat as us, you’ve been expecting this book for nearly two years now. We’re proud to report that this trilogy conclusion was well worth the wait. Here are three of our favorite things about Eyes of Kings by Chloe Gong!
Book Overview: Eyes Of Kings

Summary: War beckons in the kingdom of Talin. On one side sits Calla Tuoleimi and Anton Makusa, and on the other, the recently dethroned August Shenzhi and Calla’s own predecessor Sinoa Tuoleimi. Neither will rest until the opposition is buried.
Calla assumed victory would be easy. She wears the divine crown after a violent coup, wielding the most powerful weapon in the kingdom. Then the provinces start to whisper of the old gods returning to earth, and suddenly the game board is flipped upside-down.
Anton thought he aligned himself with victory. When he swore to serve as Calla’s general, he understood the battle they were waging. But he fears Calla is no longer herself with the crown. Rather, he fears that Calla is returning to who she once was.
August would sacrifice anything for victory. He has waited his entire life for the throne, and surrender is not an option. In the face of age-old immortals challenging his terrain and the possibility of betrayal from his closest and most cherished guard, he must be careful who he trusts.
Because when the war ends, there can only be one king.
New Challenges
Calla and Anton have been put through the wringer ever since book one, Immortal Longings. And well, their struggle does not end so easily in Eyes of Kings. The pair now know that everything they thought to be impossible is, in fact, possible. Now that they have the power, they’re not afraid of using it to the fullest. But even as Calla and Anton mobilize against on August and Otto, both sides face countless losses. Throw in old gods to the equation, and their plans become even more complicated.
So Many Reveals
Speaking of old gods, we also find that Talin’s so-called history seems to have omitted a few important details. All of that comes to a head in Eyes of Kings. (We assume you’ve already read Vilest Things, but if you haven’t, this is your spoiler warning.) Sinoa Tuoleimi wants to reclaim her throne, something she’s been planning for over 100 years. But what happens when we find out her true identity? And what does that mean for the rest of our characters? The twists and gradual reveals had our jaws on the floor, especially once history really started to click into place.
The Final Battle
As with any great trilogy conclusion, Eyes of Kings culminates in an action-packed final battle. Calla and Anton’s forces converge with August and Otto’s troops. Bodies jump from one to another. Some take back their rightful place. Others have the biggest truth bombs dropped onto them. The pandemonium leads us right back to the palace in San-Er, where it all started. We must say, it’s such a bittersweet and open ending, but we also feel a sense of relief for our characters. (After the tears, of course.) Their hard work wasn’t done in vain, and that’s really all we can ask for.
With jaw-dropping reveals and explosive battles, Chloe Gong’s Eyes of Kings masterfully wraps up the Flesh and False Gods trilogy. We’re finding it hard to let go…
