Drawing inspiration from Irish lore, The Lure of Wolves and Whispers is the first book in The Martyred Isle trilogy. And what a series starter it is! This fantasy follows 19-year-old Maeve as she infiltrates the palace on a deadly mission and lands herself in an even more deadly competition for a marriage with the crown prince.

Cutthroat Competition
In The Lure of Wolves and Whispers, Maeve’s forced into the Assay, a contest between noble daughters for a chance to be the next High Queen. It has since expanded to include one girl from the peasant class as a deterrent for rebellion. And in order to save her sister, Maeve has no other choice but to participate. They’re tested on cunning, wisdom, and strength. The competition is ruthless, leaving Maeve constantly on her toes. And we love when a fantasy novel doesn’t pull its punches!
Maeve’s Transformation
Speaking of ruthless, Maeve must train and level up heavily in The Lure of Wolves and Whispers. Or else, she risks dying before she completes her true mission for infiltrating the palace. Maeve doesn’t start off as a strong fighter, but she is quick with a knife and has decent survival skills at least. This makes all her hard training with Talon and Aoife all the more satisfying. By the end, Maeve has what it takes to hold her own against even the toughest opponent in the competition.
Open Ending
As with any fantasy trilogy, we can expect the first book to tear down the existing world and set up for some major changes in the sequel. And The Lure of Wolves and Whispers does this beautifully. Maeve sees her mission through to the end, while Wolf takes the next step in his master plan. But things ultimately don’t go their way (when do they ever?), and they must regroup and recover. We already can’t wait to see what they’ll accomplish in the next book.
