How (Not) To Renovate A Haunted House By Jenny L. Howe

For the horror-averse, we think How (Not) to Renovate a Haunted House by Jenny L. Howe is right up your alley. It’s a spooky yet cozy YA romance between an aspiring historian and an amateur ghost hunter that we’ve been obsessing over. Amity Callaway wants to make the most of her summer before college. If only her mother didn’t move them across the country into a supposedly haunted house. In need of a fresh start and an explanation for the strange occurrences around her house, Amity meets Theo Hargrave, the local contractor’s son and a true believer in ghosts. The two make a deal: Theo and his family’s help with renovations for Amity’s help investigating the supernatural activity throughout the house.

The Killing Rules By Bree Despain

The next Summerween book on our list is The Killing Rules by Bree Despain. It’s a contemporary paranormal thriller following Harper Westbrook, a Blood Bound girl cursed with a bloodlust that can only be satisfied by killing terrible men. Harper controls her monstrous abilities with a strict set of rules. Her biggest rule is to stay away from Grayson Jones, AKA her ultimate crush up until the night her curse manifested three years ago. Meanwhile, Grayson will stop at nothing to find his father’s killer. But the more he investigates, the closer he gets to uncovering Harper’s secrets. We love the thread of mythology in this thriller, along with the push-pull romance between Harper and Grayson.

Gingerbread Bones By Lindsay Lovise

Next, we have Lindsay Lovise’s new YA paranormal mystery and suspense novel, Gingerbread Bones. Georgie Lieder and her brother Hamish are shipped off to the Maine wilderness for their stepmother’s new reality TV show for troubled youths. The siblings, along with nine other contestants, are meant to spend two weeks rehabilitating completely off the grid. But the counselors disappear the next morning, leaving the teens to fend for themselves. Not only do they have to find food, water, and shelter to survive, but there’s another danger lurking in the woods. One that isn’t just hunting the group—it’s playing a game. This book is arguably the scariest on this list, so beware of reading it at night!
