The reigning K-Pop queens of summer are officially back! Red Velvet recently dropped their brand new, summer-themed Velvet Summer mini-album within days of their 12th anniversary to make sure all the Reveluvs around the world have the perfect soundtrack to complement their new summer memories. It’s been over two years since we got an OT5 ReVe release, but Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri certainly made up for it with these five new songs.
‘Surfin’ Boy’ officially joins the ranks as an elite-tier Red Velvet summer song, alongside hits like ‘Red Flavor’ and ‘Power Up,’ but also stands on its own with a slick bossa nova flair. And to make it even more special, Joy wrote it all by herself, making it the first time she’s written on a title track and the first time that one of the members has written a Red Velvet song alone! Knowing this gives the song an even more joyful energy that matches its message about making the most of the summer. Like the concept photos, the ‘Surfin’ Boy’ music video balances a beachy mood with alluring siren visuals – the girls draw in the surfin’ boy, only for Yeri to shoot him with her crossbow from ‘Peek-A-Boo.’
I was able to pour out everything I wanted to say to Red Velvet and our fans while writing these lyrics. I wanted to convey that whenever we meet again, we can build memories even more beautiful than before. Seulgi even sent me a message praising how singable the lyrics were after mine were chosen. I was so happy I nearly cried.

Everyone knows Red Velvet’s b-side game is unmatched, and Velvet Summer is far from the exception. Where their past summer songs have leaned more sunny and vibrant, these tracks feel like the moments during and after that magical golden-hour sunset as the breeze kicks in and the air has an energizing spark to it. From the slick, flirty ‘Hot Girls Cold Vibe’ to the bittersweet, nostalgic ‘Hawaii’ (another Joy solo write that describes the way adults can grow away from their childhood dreams), there are so many beautiful moments that let the members show off their incredible vocals, which somehow keep getting better and better.
Summer has its hot, vibrant moments, but there are also days when you just want to do nothing and take it slow. This album captures that languid, mature summer sensibility.

Velvet Summer is just what we needed to bring extra life to our summer! We’ve missed hearing Red Velvet together so much, but this mini-album was totally worth the wait to us. All that’s left to do is go make some sparkling summer memories to go along with it…
