To celebrate the release of the acoustic video for ‘Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa),’ we got to chat with Roy and ask him some questions about the music video! So without further ado, let’s get into the interview…

The Interview

We last talked to you during the 33 era. Our favorite songs seems to fluctuate with our moods, what was your favorite song when you were making the album and what is your favorite today?
My favorite song is and was definitely ‘The Circle’ because that one just came like a flow when I was in Joshua Tree. It feels like something that has existed for a long time.

The reason why we are here is because of ‘Bad Feeling’ and it is out now! It’s completely blown up on TikTok (as it should have). What has been your favorite TikTok from a fan that has been posted?
I haven’t seen a lot of them, but my favorite of the ones I have seen was from Pey. She did some really cute ones and is one of the OG Jagwar Twin fans.

Can you tell us a little about the music video concept and how that came about? How involved were you in the creative process?
I wrote this whole treatment for the ‘Bad Feeling’ music video. I love symbolism and storytelling, but the budget needed for the video I wanted to make was like $2 million… So we had to figure out a way to make one within our budget. We ended up using a lot of metaphors, like with the circus, and I’ve been really into those themes of the world being the circus and you not knowing which way is up and down or what’s the truth and what’s a lie.

One of the lines in ‘Bad Feeling’ is “when the truth is a lie that nobody can tell” and I think that’s something that we’re going through collectively as a human race: discerning what is truth. Especially with AI. The lines are getting even more blurry, but I think it’s an opportunity for humans to build our own internal discernment. That’s what ‘Bad Feeling’ is really about. It’s about trusting your internal compass — not what your parents say, or what the media says, or what your friends say. Trust your own internal compass.

For the release of the acoustic version of ‘Bad Feeling’ you put out a live video for it. How special was it getting to take a step back and really be with your audience for the song and get them involved in singing the chorus with you?
I think acoustic is one of my favorite ways to play because it’s just about the song. Often, you put the same lyrics and melody underneath different chords and you get a different feel for the meaning of the song. It was just so beautiful to invite people into this intimate candlelit cave we created at Lauren Powell Projects gallery – with a real grass floor and painted moths on the walls under this huge glowing moon cocoon – full of people who love the music and knew the words and were fully belting along… It was just a beautiful experience.
