Honey bees! Hello and welcome to another one of our legendary interviews! You read that right, we got another musical act for you that we are in love with and you should get to know better! This time, we offer you Toronto-based indie rock band MONOWHALES.

Hey there, MONOWHALES, and welcome to The Honey POP! It’s been five years since your first single, ‘Take It Back.’ What would you tell MONOWHALES from 5 years ago?
I’d wanna tell us to take it easy, every detail is not that important.
You’ve truly made a name for yourself on the indie rock scene and have become a staple on our playlists. What is it like self-releasing music and seeing all your hard work pay off?
We stay humble, we are so grateful for the love we get and every person matters in our journey so thank you! Still, a long way to the (figurative) top if you wanna rock and roll.
We can’t wait for your new album, Tunnel Vision – a great name by the way – which comes out later this year! What was the writing process for this album like? How is it different from Daytona Bleach?
It was very different, this was a pandemic baby. Written online over Zoom, emailing each other recordings and compiling them. Honestly, it was a fun departure. The limitation was a challenge that we think produces some creative stuff.
We have been listening to ‘StuckintheMiddle’ on repeat and find the
angst and want to set oneself free very relatable. What’s your tip for someone stuck in self-doubt and lost in the way of finding themselves?
Take a bath hahaha. Mostly what I mean by that is find your happy place. Some place you can easily come back to where you can spend some time and have some free thinking. I am a true believer in manifestation with no limits. Keep dreaming, and chip away at your goals while taking care of yourself. At least that’s what we are trying to do.
If you had to pick any lyrics from any of your songs to describe your
band which one would it be?
OOOOOF THIS A HARD ONE. — Each song title on the upcoming album says it PERFECTLY without saying them all here is a start:
1.) I like to be in ‘CTRL.’
2.) I’m ‘StuckintheMiddle,’ chained up like an animal.

4.) I got these ‘New Threads’ kicking up the sidewalk, I got these loose ends ticking like a time bomb.

As we have no doubt to introduce you to new fans through this interview, which song by you would you want new fans to check out first?

What’s your recording process like? What are your studio rituals when you sit down and record and write music?
Once we get to the studio, we have some fun with the songs, but for the most part the songs are almost fully demo’d and ready to be re-tracked when we get there. Studio rituals are being really conscious about mental and physical health in the studio to make sure you can pull out the best versions of yourself onto the album.
MONOWHALES is about to be an iconic rock band we just know it. But who inspired each of you on your journey to becoming musicians? Who do you look up to?
SALLY: THE FLAMING LIPS, WHY? THE MAGIC THEY GIVE
JORDAN: NICK CAVE, WHY? UNINHIBITED PERFORMANCE
ZACH: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, WHY? IT’S CLEARLY THE COOLEST THING YOU CAN EVER DO
If you had to switch band positions for one day, for example, Sally
on the drums and Jordan on the guitar, which position would you like to take? Who do you think would do best in each position?
SALLY: GUITAR
JORDAN: BASS
ZACH: DRUMS I think we are all capable of it!
And lastly, what’s your favorite song off of Tunnel Vision? What do you want the fans to take away from this album?
SALLY: ‘CTRL^^^’
JORDAN: ‘CHANGE ###’ ( not out yet )
ZACH: ‘Everything I do is a mistake***’ (not out yet)
SALLY: Gave away a lot of secrets on this interview hehe. I want them to connect to the songs and to sing with us on our upcoming tour. We can’t wait to do that. Let your weird flag fly, baby!
