You already know how excited we were to hear this long-awaited comeback from VAV earlier this summer. 33 months…and it was worth all the wait. VAV dropped a tracklist we are more than happy to feed both our conscious and Subcönscióus minds with. Because we all need a reminder sometimes that we are indeed the ‘Designer’ of our own lives.🙌
We had a chance to ask the members some questions so we dived into the message of this self-produced album, their growth during hiatus, Latin inspirations, fashion, and more!
Read our Q&A with St. Van, Ace, Ayno, Jacob, Lou, and Ziu below!
It’s been quite some time since your previous comeback. Did you approach the creative process of this album any differently this time?
ACE: This album has been produced entirely by ourselves, we had a lot of discussions about it, and Subcönscióus ended up really reflecting those thoughts and opinions. Because we put a lot of effort into this album, all the time spent during the production process just came to me when the album was released.
AYNO: As I wrote the songs, I imagined the facial expressions and gestures that the members would make on the stage.
This isn’t the first time actually, you’ve been participating in the writing and production of your songs previously as well. But is there any style or genre you haven’t tried yet that you’d love to?
ST.VAN: Personally, I want to try hip-hop.
ACE: A hip concept is something I want to try as well. The members like to rap and love having fun, so it would be interesting to try music with some hip-hop beats.
Where did you draw inspiration for Subcönscióus from?
ACE: I receive artistic inspiration from the members. They are very talented and I receive tons of good stimulation from them. Also, our driving force and inspiration for making music so far is VAMPZ. They are our muse, and we always think of them while making music.
Are there any specific goals you would like to achieve in this era?
LOU: I really want to spread the news that VAV is back. If possible, I want people to know that we make great music.
How has this new album contributed to your personal and artistic growth?
ACE: The fact that all of the members produced this album, not stopping at mere participation, is the biggest improvement.
‘Designer’ includes Latin elements and is obviously another bop in your discography! It’s not your first Latin-influenced song, so we were wondering if there are any Latin artists, or songs in particular, that you have been listening to and taking inspiration from.
ST.VAN: I listen to music from Rosalia and Bad Bunny a lot.
ZIU: I love Shakira’s music. They are very exciting.
Even though the song isn’t about fashion, we have to ask you about it! Do you have any favorite designers? Who are your style inspirations?
JACOB: I love the styles of Virgil Abloh. I prefer avant-garde and trendy styles, so I frequently watch brand fashion shows online.
Which member has the best style?
ACE: I think it’s JACOB. Not only he does have a great fashion sense, but also he has a great physique so anything will look great on him. He also worked as a model before, so he understands fashion as no one in the group does.
Which styling from all your albums best reflects your personal style?
ZIU: I think the style from this album, the title track ‘Designer’ really reflects my personal style. We made this comeback after a long hiatus and thus making it more meaningful, so I think that’s why I chose this album.
Subcönscióus has a really hopeful message! We love the celebration of everyone’s “potential to make themselves shine!” What do each of you think makes you shine?
ST.VAN: I think all the members have their unique charm, including our physiques, vocal skills, looks, etc.
Between this new album and your previous project, did you learn any new hobbies or skills you’d like to share?
ZIU: I think I go on walks more easily and freely. Also, I practiced my singing a lot when I was in the military so I think my tone has improved.
AYNO: The way I vocalize has changed a lot through this album.
You’re all well-versed in the happenings of a person’s subconscious now. What emotions or reactions do you hope this album brings to the front of fans’ minds?
LOU: I hope that the fans grasp the core message of this album, to not be self-conscious and design their own lives.
JACOB: Stop being self-conscious! Our fans would tell us that sometimes they are ashamed of being fanboys/fangirls.
I think you should just do the things that make you happy without being too conscious about what others think of you.
