Pen Pin has been lurking in the shadows, with Emily Moore, a touring musician for Taylor Swift, and Jeni Magana, who has performed alongside Mitski! It’s a new project from Magana and Moore, nearly everything is done themselves. Their upcoming single ‘Fringe’ arrives on August 29th, and we’re just so excited about their upcoming track, that we’re doing a deep dive on their two previous single releases: ‘Spooky Love’ and ‘Office Party.’ And guess what? They’re both holiday themed.
Okay, yes, we know, it’s August, but that doesn’t mean we can’t preemptively add songs to our holiday playlists. And, they’ll have to suffice until ‘Fringe’ is out on streaming platforms. We have a reminder on our phone for August 29th.
‘Spooky Love’
It starts off with a smooth, distorted synth and beautifully layered vocals, the beat imitating something like a heartbeat. Both Magana and Moore sing on this track. We love the weaving sound of the synthesizer in the pre-chorus, before the chorus gets louder, with instruments flowing in as the vocalists croon about Halloween and wanting to marry the one they love. The chorus could have been too cheesy sounding, but Pen Pin manage to have an enjoyable cheesiness to the lyrics. Which, we love. Obviously. That’s why we’re telling you about it.
‘Office Party’
‘Office Party’ features sleigh bells, but, and we don’t know how it doesn’t necessarily scream Christmas, but it doesn’t. Instead, it adds a sense of peacefulness, with the slow tempo-ed song following. We love the steel guitar that picks throughout the song, the chorus soaring slightly, creating a swaying melody. We love the distinguishable nature of Pen Pin and their voices and sound, chill indie-pop soaked with loving lyrics and imagined scenarios. Need we say more?
We love ‘Spooky Love’ and ‘Office Party’ because even though they’re based on Halloween and the winter holidays, they don’t feel overly saturated with their ‘vibes.’ Pen Pin sticks to their indie-pop sound, incorporating elements from both holidays, creating songs that can be listened to year-round. They just happen to be about Halloween or the holidays.
